ZEISS and WEHI Establish First Australian labs@location Hub for Advanced Imaging

Dr René Hessling, Head of ZEISS Australia and New Zealand, and Prof Kelly Rogers OAM, WEHI division head and manager of the Centre for Dynamic Imaging, open the new space.

(IN BRIEF) ZEISS has launched its labs@location program in Australia, naming the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research’s Centre for Dynamic Imaging as its first local partner. The collaboration brings ZEISS’ advanced microscopy technologies together with WEHI’s long-standing imaging expertise, supporting researchers through improved access to resources, streamlined workflows, and coordinated support. As part of ZEISS’ global labs@location network, the partnership is designed to foster long-term scientific advancement and enable new discoveries in areas such as cancer, immunity, and lifelong health.

(PRESS RELEASE) JENA / MELBOURNE, 18-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — ZEISS has officially introduced its labs@location program to Australia, marking a new chapter in its collaboration with leading research institutions in the region. The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research has been selected as the program’s inaugural Australian partner, with WEHI’s Centre for Dynamic Imaging joining the global labs@location network.

The launch was marked by the opening of a dedicated space at WEHI, led by Dr René Hessling, Head of ZEISS Australia and New Zealand, alongside Professor Kelly Rogers OAM, WEHI Division Head and Manager of the Centre for Dynamic Imaging. The partnership brings ZEISS’ advanced imaging expertise together with one of Australia’s most respected biomedical research institutes.

WEHI has a research history spanning more than a century, with scientists focused on addressing some of the most challenging health issues worldwide. The institute’s work targets transformative advances in cancer, infection and immunity, and lifelong health. Within WEHI, the Centre for Dynamic Imaging plays a central role by providing high-quality microscopy and imaging services to researchers and collaborators across Australia, supporting discoveries that contribute to new therapeutic approaches and deeper insights into disease biology.

Through the labs@location partnership, researchers will benefit from improved access to established high-end imaging resources, more streamlined workflows, and a shared environment designed to support sustained scientific progress. The Centre for Dynamic Imaging will continue to function as a key hub for advanced microscopy and sample analysis, while clearer user pathways and coordinated support between ZEISS and WEHI aim to enhance efficiency and ensure optimal use of existing technologies.

Dr René Hessling said the addition of WEHI’s Centre for Dynamic Imaging as the first Australian labs@location partner reflects the institute’s leadership in microscopy innovation. He noted that the collaboration represents an important milestone in the long-standing relationship between ZEISS and WEHI and expressed confidence that the partnership will enable new ideas and significant scientific breakthroughs.

Professor Kelly Rogers OAM said joining the labs@location network strengthens WEHI’s capacity to advance microscopy, which underpins world-class biomedical research. She highlighted that combining ZEISS’ technology portfolio with WEHI’s imaging expertise will help accelerate discovery and reveal critical mechanisms that drive disease.

The labs@location initiative connects ZEISS with research institutes recognized for excellence in specific technologies, applications, and workflows. As part of this global community, partner institutions gain access to shared expertise, in-depth technical knowledge, and dedicated services designed to support advanced research environments.
