Volkswagen Begins Production of ID.UNYX 08 Electric SUV in Hefei as Part of China Focused EV Strategy

ID.UNYX 08 – made in China for China

(IN BRIEF) Volkswagen Group has begun series production of the ID.UNYX 08, its first fully connected all-electric full-size SUV designed specifically for the Chinese market. The vehicle is being produced at Volkswagen Anhui’s plant in Hefei and was developed in cooperation with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPENG in just 24 months. The ID.UNYX 08 features advanced technologies including 800-volt fast charging, Level 2 driver assistance systems and over-the-air software updates, reflecting Volkswagen’s strategy to combine German engineering with locally developed digital innovation. The model represents the first product from the partnership between Volkswagen and XPENG and forms part of the Group’s largest electric vehicle expansion in China, with more than 20 new locally developed electric models scheduled for launch this year and up to 50 by 2030. The initiative supports Volkswagen’s “In China, for China” strategy, which focuses on strengthening local research and development, building strategic partnerships and accelerating the company’s transformation in the rapidly growing new energy vehicle market.

(PRESS RELEASE) WOLFSBURG, 14-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Volkswagen Group has begun series production of the ID.UNYX 08, a fully electric full-size SUV developed specifically for the Chinese market as part of the company’s “In China, for China” strategy. The vehicle is being produced at Volkswagen Anhui’s facility in Hefei, marking another step in the Group’s push to accelerate electrification and local innovation in China.

The ID.UNYX 08 represents a joint development between Volkswagen and Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPENG. From the start of the cooperation to production readiness, the model was developed in just 24 months, reflecting the accelerated pace of vehicle development aimed at meeting the expectations of China’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.

Ready for the Chinese market: The ID.UNYX 08 is now rolling off the production line at Volkswagen Anhui in Hefei, China.

The new model is Volkswagen’s first fully connected, all-electric full-size SUV and introduces advanced technology designed for next-generation intelligent vehicles. The ID.UNYX 08 includes 800-volt ultra-fast charging capability, Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems, and over-the-air software updates that allow the vehicle’s functions to be continuously improved after purchase.

According to Oliver Blume, the model reflects the company’s broader strategy launched three years ago to deepen its presence in China through localized development and technology partnerships. Blume highlighted that the vehicle combines Volkswagen’s engineering heritage with local technological innovation, while also demonstrating the company’s ability to bring new electric models to market at high speed and competitive pricing.

Ralf Brandstätter emphasized that the ID.UNYX 08 marks the beginning of Volkswagen’s largest electric vehicle product campaign in China to date. He noted that the Group plans to introduce new electric vehicles in the country at an average pace of one model every two weeks during the year, illustrating the speed at which Volkswagen is expanding its electric portfolio in the region.

The vehicle has been specifically designed to meet the preferences of Chinese consumers and integrates a range of locally developed technologies. It represents the first model in a new generation of smart electric vehicles that Volkswagen intends to introduce as part of its broader transformation into a technology-focused mobility company.

He Xiaopeng said the start of production demonstrates the strength of the collaboration between the two companies. The partnership combines Volkswagen’s global automotive expertise with XPENG’s experience in electric vehicle technology and digital innovation, with the goal of delivering new products and long-term value for both partners.

The cooperation between Volkswagen and XPENG began in 2023, focusing on joint development of electric vehicle platforms and advanced technologies. The ID.UNYX 08 is the first product resulting from this collaboration, and a second jointly developed model is expected to launch later this year.

Development of the cooperation models is supported by Volkswagen China Technology Company (VCTC), which oversees product design, validation processes, quality standards and driving dynamics. The project also involves collaboration between CARIAD China and XPENG on a new zonal electrical and electronic architecture known as the China Electronic Architecture (CEA). This platform is intended to support future Volkswagen models built in China, including both new-energy vehicles and conventional powertrains.

The launch of the ID.UNYX 08 is scheduled for the first half of the year. As part of Volkswagen’s broader expansion strategy in China, the Group plans to introduce more than 20 new locally developed electric vehicle models during the year, with the total expected to reach 50 new models by 2030.

Through continued investment in local research and development capabilities and partnerships with Chinese technology companies, Volkswagen aims to strengthen its position in the country’s fast-growing new energy vehicle (NEV) and intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) markets while maintaining its role as the leading international automotive manufacturer operating in China.
