Vodafone Connects Crete to Global Network with New IEX Subsea Cable Landing
(IN BRIEF) Vodafone Greece has linked Crete to the India-Europe-Xpress (IEX) subsea cable system via a new landing station in Tympaki, creating a new route for data traffic that strengthens connectivity and resilience on the island. Part of a broader network, the IEX system connects Mumbai to Europe and extends to regions across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. This installation enhances Crete’s infrastructure and positions the island as a valuable hub for further connectivity and investment.
(PRESS RELEASE) BERKSHIRE, 2-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Vodafone Greece has successfully connected the island of Crete to the India-Europe-Xpress (IEX) subsea cable system, marking a significant enhancement in regional and global connectivity. The cable, which lands at a newly constructed station in Tympaki on the island’s southern coast, provides an alternative path that bypasses the traditionally crowded northern Mediterranean routes. This station offers increased data capacity and network resilience to Crete’s infrastructure, with potential for expanded connectivity and investment opportunities in the area.
The IEX subsea cable, spanning nearly 10,000 kilometers, is part of an intercontinental network that links Mumbai to Europe and extends to Singapore, the Middle East, and various parts of Africa. With this connection, Crete is now integrated into a global network that includes landings across Oman, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, France, Italy, and Greece.
As one of the largest investors in subsea cable technology, Vodafone continues its legacy of pioneering global connectivity solutions. This new addition aligns with Vodafone’s commitment to the expansive 2Africa project, which further extends connectivity between Africa, Asia, and Europe.
