Vitol Bunkers Introduces FuelEU Compliant Co-Processed Bunkering Fuel, First Delivered to Elandra Falcon in Fujairah

(IN BRIEF) Vitol Bunkers has introduced FuelEU compliant co-processed bunkering fuel, the first delivery of which was made to the Elandra Falcon vessel in Fujairah. Produced at Vitol’s refinery, this fuel meets the RMG380 VLSFO grade and will be marketed globally. By using a range of sustainable feedstocks, the co-processed fuel helps reduce competition with food crops and cuts greenhouse gas intensity by over 70%. This move supports compliance with FuelEU Maritime regulations, with monitoring provided by DNV’s Emissions Connect product. Vitol aims to offer an expanded range of compliant fuels to help customers meet evolving regulatory standards.

(PRESS RELEASE) GENEVA, 29-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Vitol Bunkers has announced the launch of its FuelEU compliant co-processed bunkering fuel, with the first delivery made to Vitol’s Elandra Falcon vessel in Fujairah. The co-processed fuel, produced at Vitol’s 100kbd refinery in Fujairah, meets the RMG380 VLSFO (Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil) grade and will be marketed in various locations by Vitol Bunkers in the near future.

This new fuel offering provides customers with a sustainable alternative to conventional bunker fuels, without requiring additional permissions or special clauses in charter party agreements. The co-processed fuel, which has the same chemical composition and quality as traditional fuels, reduces competition for crop-based feedstocks by enabling the use of a wide variety of sustainable feedstocks for marine fuels. This approach helps lower the pressure on food-based feedstocks while promoting the use of waste-based and advanced sustainable materials.

The co-processing process is certified under the ISCC-EU scheme, which ensures rigorous quality controls, including annual audits and product specification checks. The carbon intensity of the sustainable portion of the fuel is aligned with used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME) and results in a reduction of over 70% in greenhouse gas intensity (GHGi) compared to fossil-based alternatives. To comply with the FuelEU Maritime regulations, Vitol Bunkers, in collaboration with DNV’s Emissions Connect product, will monitor lower GHG intensity fuel consumption, with verification set for 2026.

Helge Hermundsgård, Head of Sales for Emissions Connect at DNV, commented, “DNV is excited to support Vitol in addressing the regulatory complexities of FuelEU Maritime through our Emissions Connect solution. This tool is designed to help maritime stakeholders like Vitol manage their emissions data with confidence, ensuring compliance while seizing commercial opportunities.”

Ian Butler, Head of Energy Transition for Shipping at Vitol, added, “With the introduction of FuelEU Maritime, we’re thrilled to expand our range of compliant fuels. The addition of co-processed VLSFO to our portfolio of biofuel blends, up to B100, demonstrates our commitment to supporting our customers as they navigate increasing regulatory demands. We continue to innovate, offering products that make compliance as seamless as possible.”
