Viking Libra Launch Marks Major Step in Zero Emission Cruise Ship Development and Strengthens Fincantieri Partnership

(IN BRIEF) Fincantieri has launched the Viking Libra at its Ancona shipyard, a new cruise ship for Viking scheduled for delivery in late 2026. The vessel will be the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, featuring a propulsion system that combines liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells to enable zero-emission operations, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas. The launch highlights the ongoing partnership between Fincantieri and Viking, which now includes a total of 26 ships across deliveries, orders, and agreements. The Ancona shipyard continues to play a key role in this collaboration, supported by significant production capacity, a large workforce, and ongoing investments in advanced technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence to enhance efficiency and quality.

(PRESS RELEASE) TRIESTE, 20-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Fincantieri has marked a new milestone in its collaboration with Viking with the launch of the cruise ship Viking Libra at its Ancona shipyard, reinforcing its role in advancing next-generation shipbuilding and sustainable maritime innovation. The vessel, currently under construction, is scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2026.

The launch ceremony brought together key representatives from both organisations, including Gilberto Tobaldi, Director of the Ancona shipyard, alongside members of the Viking team, highlighting the continued strength of the partnership between the two companies.

Viking Libra represents a significant development in environmentally responsible cruise design. With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons and a length of 239 meters, the ship will be able to accommodate up to 998 passengers across 499 staterooms.

The vessel is set to become the world’s first cruise ship powered by hydrogen, incorporating a propulsion system partially based on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. This advanced configuration is designed to enable zero-emission operations, allowing the ship to navigate in environmentally sensitive regions where stricter sustainability standards apply.

The launch further underscores the ongoing collaboration between Fincantieri and Viking, a partnership that began in 2012 and has continued to expand within the cruise sector. Taking into account vessels already delivered, ships currently on order, and additional agreements and options subject to standard financing conditions, the total number of units associated with the partnership has reached 26.

This continued cooperation reflects a shared focus on innovation, efficiency, and sustainability in cruise ship development.

The Ancona shipyard plays a central role within Fincantieri’s industrial network, supporting complex shipbuilding projects through its extensive infrastructure and skilled workforce. The facility spans approximately 360,000 square meters and has a production capacity of 60,000 gross tons, supported by lifting systems capable of handling up to 500 tons and hull construction capabilities of around 1,200 tons.

Since 2009, the shipyard has delivered more than 20 vessels, supported by a workforce of approximately 3,700 personnel. The site continues to benefit from ongoing investment aimed at expanding production capacity and enhancing operational performance.

As part of the broader Operations Excellence program, the shipyard is integrating advanced technologies, including robotics and artificial intelligence, to improve efficiency, streamline processes, and enhance overall work quality.

With the launch of Viking Libra, Fincantieri and Viking continue to advance the development of more sustainable and technologically advanced cruise vessels. The project reflects a broader industry shift toward environmentally responsible solutions, positioning both companies at the forefront of innovation in the global cruise market.
