VARD Launches Cyber-Resilient Vessels and Wins Ship of the Year for Prysmian Mona Lisa

(IN BRIEF) VARD, a subsidiary of the Fincantieri Group, has made a significant impact on the maritime industry with the delivery of two Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs), Grampian Kestrel and Purus Chinook, both equipped with advanced cyber resilience solutions. These vessels are designed to meet the new cybersecurity regulations that will be enforced from July 2024, ensuring that they can operate securely even when facing cyber threats. Their delivery ahead of the regulatory deadline highlights VARD’s commitment to innovation and forward-thinking design in shipbuilding. This milestone is further complemented by the prestigious “Ship of the Year 2025” award for the Prysmian Mona Lisa, a cutting-edge cable-laying vessel recognized for its deep-water capabilities, high operational efficiency, and zero CO2 emissions in port. Both achievements reinforce VARD’s leadership in integrating technological advancements, sustainability, and cybersecurity into maritime solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) TRIESTE, 4-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — VARD, part of the Fincantieri Group and a leader in the design and construction of specialized vessels, has reached a significant milestone with the delivery of two pioneering Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs) that feature cyber notation. The vessels, Grampian Kestrel and Purus Chinook, were built for North Star and Purus, respectively, and incorporate advanced cybersecurity measures that comply with new regulations set to be enforced from July 2024.

These vessels are equipped with innovative solutions designed to mitigate the risk of cyberattacks, allowing them to maintain operations even under threat and to quickly restore full functionality. By meeting the stringent cybersecurity requirements and achieving the UR E26 and E27 notations set by the International Association of Class Societies (IACS), these vessels demonstrate VARD’s commitment to integrating cybersecurity into the entire shipbuilding process, from initial design to final delivery. This proactive approach showcases VARD’s industry foresight, as the vessels were contracted in 2023, well ahead of the regulatory deadline.

The delivery of these vessels also reinforces VARD and Fincantieri Group’s leadership in the technological advancement of the maritime sector. It highlights their ongoing efforts to drive innovation and sustainability through state-of-the-art engineering solutions.

In addition, VARD’s excellence in shipbuilding was recently recognized with the prestigious “Ship of the Year 2025” award by Skipsrevyen, a leading maritime publication, for the cable-laying vessel “Prysmian Mona Lisa”. This vessel stands out for its unparalleled capabilities, including the ability to operate in deep waters of over 3,000 meters and carry one of the highest cable loads on the market. With two carousels of 7,000 and 10,000 tons, the vessel combines high operational efficiency with an advanced energy storage system that doubles its energy capacity compared to its predecessor. Additionally, a high-voltage shore connection allows it to operate with zero CO2 emissions while docked.

The “Ship of the Year 2025” award was presented at Nor-Shipping, Norway’s foremost maritime business event, recognizing outstanding progress and innovation within the industry.
