University of Southampton Marks 25 Years of EDGE Transforming Clinical Research Management and Patient Care

The EDGE team came together at the University of Southampton’s Highfield Campus to mark 25 years of research innovation and excellence

(IN BRIEF) The University of Southampton is celebrating 25 years of EDGE, a clinical research management system developed by its Clinical Informatics Research Unit. Originally created to improve coordination and data access for research teams, EDGE is now widely used across the UK and internationally, supporting hospitals, universities, and healthcare organisations. The platform enables real-time access to study data, improving efficiency, reducing errors, and helping accelerate the delivery of new treatments. With adoption across most NHS regions and multiple countries, EDGE has become a key tool in modern clinical research, and its anniversary is being marked with events highlighting its impact and future potential.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOUTHAMPTON, 1-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — University of Southampton is marking the 25th anniversary of EDGE, a clinical research management system developed by its Clinical Informatics Research Unit (CIRU), which has grown from a local innovation into a globally used platform supporting medical research teams.

Over the past quarter century, EDGE has been adopted by a wide network of academics, clinicians, software developers, and data specialists, helping to streamline research operations across hospitals, universities, charities, and community health organisations. The system provides real-time access to accurate study data, enabling teams to monitor progress, manage participant recruitment, and coordinate research activities efficiently and securely.

By improving data quality and accessibility, EDGE allows research teams to reduce administrative workload and focus more on patient care. The platform plays a key role in accelerating the delivery of new treatments by ensuring that researchers have reliable and up-to-date information at their fingertips.

Professor James Batchelor, Director of CIRU and founder of EDGE, highlighted the system’s evolution from a local solution into a widely trusted tool supporting thousands of professionals. He emphasized its contribution to improving research quality and enabling faster translation of clinical studies into patient treatments, while also pointing to ongoing ambitions to further enhance its capabilities on a global scale.

Healthcare professionals using the platform also note its practical benefits. Carly Ringrose from Cancer Research UK in Southampton described EDGE as an essential tool in daily clinical research work, enabling quick access to up-to-date trial information and helping to ensure accuracy in data collection while reducing the risk of errors.

Today, EDGE is used across more than 90 percent of NHS regions in England, as well as in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and has expanded internationally to countries including Canada, New Zealand, Cyprus, and India. This broad adoption reflects its role in supporting collaborative research efforts and improving the efficiency of clinical studies worldwide.

To mark the milestone, the EDGE team launched a year of celebrations with a silver jubilee conference, bringing together its global user community to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and explore future developments in clinical research management.
