Uniper and Energiekontor Break Ground on 46.2 MW East Ayrshire Wind Farm to Power 66,000 Homes

(IN BRIEF) Uniper and Energiekontor UK have launched construction on a 46.2 MW wind farm in East Ayrshire, Scotland, capable of powering over 66,000 homes. Approved in 2022 and revised in 2024, the seven-turbine project starts building in 2027 and enters service in 2028. This development is part of Uniper’s €8 billion renewable investment plan and its strategy to reach 10 GW of ready-to-build projects by the early 2030s across key European markets.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 12-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Uniper has commenced construction of its inaugural onshore wind farm in East Ayrshire, Scotland, in partnership with Energiekontor UK Ltd. This 46.2 MW project—comprising seven turbines—will begin generating renewable electricity in 2028, supplying enough power for over 66,000 UK homes annually. The site, granted planning consent in 2022 and modified in 2024, advances Uniper’s commitment to invest roughly €8 billion in renewable developments by the early 2030s and supports its goal to develop up to 10 GW of ready-to-build solar and wind capacity across Europe.

Alex Smethers, Head of Renewables UK at Uniper, said, “We’re thrilled to break ground on our first wind farm with Energiekontor. With 230 MW of solar projects already under execution, this wind scheme underscores our drive to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 and accelerate the energy transition.”

Peter Szabo, CEO of Energiekontor AG, added, “Reaching this milestone with Uniper demonstrates our shared dedication to expanding the UK’s renewable landscape. We look forward to the next phase of construction.”

AE Yates Ltd serves as balance-of-plant contractor, Energiekontor UK Construction Ltd provides construction management, and Nordex supplies the turbines. Construction begins in 2027, with commissioning slated for 2028.
