TUM Partner School Realschule Trostberg Honored with MINT21 Digital Award for Advancing Girls in STEM

(IN BRIEF) TUM’s partner school, Realschule Trostberg, has received the MINT21 Digital Award for its innovative integration of STEM education and digital learning. Through TUM’s “TUM Entdeckerinnen” program, the school engaged 60 girls in hands-on STEM projects like programming apps and exploring scientific principles, fostering confidence and interest in STEM fields. This recognition highlights the impact of TUM’s initiatives in breaking gender barriers in STEM and inspiring young women to pursue careers in science and technology.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 22-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has long championed initiatives to inspire young women to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, collaborating with schools across Bavaria as part of the “TUM Entdeckerinnen” program. One of its partner institutions, Staatliche Realschule Trostberg, has been awarded the prestigious MINT21 Digital Award for its innovative efforts in combining STEM education with digital learning.

The MINT21 Digital Award, presented by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs alongside industry associations, celebrates schools that excel in integrating STEM skills with digital tools. At Realschule Trostberg’s recent STEM Day, approximately 60 schoolgirls explored engaging activities such as programming apps, crafting binary-coded bracelets, and investigating scientific principles like the “billiard hypothesis.” These hands-on projects, led by TUM instructors, provided students with practical insights into how STEM impacts everyday life while boosting their confidence and curiosity.

TUM’s ExploreTUM initiative, which includes programs like Girls’ Day and MINT-Impulse, fosters early exposure to STEM through real-world projects and interactions with female scientists as role models. “Our mission is to unlock the potential of these girls—for their benefit and for society,” emphasized program leaders Susanne Bley and Claudia Sohnius.

Teachers at Realschule Trostberg highlight the transformative impact of the partnership with TUM. “The collaboration not only offers exciting insights but also builds the girls’ self-confidence and interest in these future-oriented fields,” said teacher Michaela Waldinger.

As the gender gap in STEM persists, TUM’s programs and partnerships like this one continue to break barriers, equipping young women with the skills and inspiration to thrive in these critical fields and contribute to shaping a sustainable future.
