Talgo Strengthens European Leadership as DSB Accepts First EuroCity Fleet for Cross-Border Routes

Talgo 230 for DSB

(IN BRIEF) Talgo has achieved a significant milestone as Danish State Railways (DSB) officially accepted its first Talgo 230 trains, marking the beginning of deliveries for a 16-train EuroCity fleet that will operate on the Copenhagen–Hamburg route. The trains, designed and manufactured in Spain, combine high passenger capacity, lightweight construction, and energy efficiency, offering a sustainable alternative to air and road travel. Each train can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h and seat 492 passengers across various configurations. Following earlier acceptance in Germany for Deutsche Bahn’s ICE L, this development further consolidates Talgo’s leadership in the European rail sector. The fleet is part of a €500 million framework contract awarded to Talgo and will soon expand its certifications to Austria, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, enabling broader cross-border operation.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 23-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Spanish train manufacturer Talgo has reached a major milestone with the formal acceptance of its first Talgo 230 trains by Danish State Railways (DSB). This crucial legal step marks the start of the delivery process for a 16-train fleet that will operate under the EuroCity (EC) brand, connecting Copenhagen and Hamburg. The acceptance follows similar approval in Germany for Deutsche Bahn’s Talgo 230 trains, officially presented in Berlin earlier this month.

The DSB acceptance represents another step forward in Talgo’s growing presence across Europe and underscores the company’s reputation for advanced rail technology and engineering excellence. The new EuroCity trains will soon begin service, reinforcing sustainable and efficient cross-border mobility between Denmark and Germany while providing passengers with a comfortable and environmentally responsible alternative to air and road transport.

Each EuroCity train, capable of speeds up to 200 km/h, accommodates nearly 500 passengers across first and second-class coaches, including dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility. The design emphasizes flexibility, comfort, and interoperability, with specialized end cars connecting seamlessly to DSB’s existing locomotive fleet. Future upgrades will include the addition of Talgo cab cars (styrevogn) to enable push-pull operations, improving turnaround times and operational efficiency.

Entirely designed and built in Spain, the Talgo 230 platform combines lightweight construction, reduced energy consumption, and high passenger capacity — making it ideal for dense, multi-route rail networks such as those in Western and Central Europe. With formal authorizations already secured in Germany and Denmark, Talgo is now advancing certification in Austria, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, extending the operational reach of the 230 series across the continent.

The DSB contract, initially awarded to Talgo in February 2020 following a competitive tender, carries a total framework value of €500 million. This includes successive orders — the first worth €134 million for eight trains, followed by expansions in 2021 and 2023, bringing the total fleet to sixteen. These trains are now either delivered or under production, reflecting Talgo’s ability to meet the high standards of national rail operators in some of Europe’s largest markets.

With the upcoming entry into service of the Talgo 230 EuroCity trains, the company continues to strengthen its position as a leading Intercity train supplier in Europe. This achievement, together with the recent launch of Deutsche Bahn’s ICE L trains, reinforces Talgo’s strategic commitment to providing high-quality, sustainable rail solutions — connecting regions from Scandinavia to Central Europe with efficiency, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
