Stadler Secures €50M Contract to Supply Advanced Signalling Systems for Bergen’s Light Rail Expansion

(IN BRIEF) Stadler has secured a €50 million contract from Bybanen Utbygging to supply and implement advanced signalling systems for the expansion of Bergen’s light rail network. The project covers the initial phase toward Åsane and includes design, delivery, and installation of train control systems, signalling infrastructure, and a new operations control center. Stadler’s proven track record in Bergen and scalable, safety-certified technology were key factors in the award. The contract also includes options for additional expansion phases and will commence on September 1, 2025.

(PRESS RELEASE) BUSSNANG, 24-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Stadler has been awarded a major contract to supply and implement state-of-the-art signalling technology for the expansion of the Bybanen light rail system in Bergen, Norway. The contract, valued at approximately €50 million, was granted by Bybanen Utbygging—a state-owned project organization under Vestland County Council—and covers the initial phase of the extension toward Åsane, with options for further phases including westward expansion toward Loddefjord.

The comprehensive contract includes the design, delivery, and deployment of modern train signalling systems, train control technologies, and a fully integrated control center, all tailored to meet the evolving needs of the Bergen tramway. The solution will be delivered at Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL2), with critical components achieving SIL4, the highest safety rating in the industry.

Stadler emerged as the preferred bidder in a competitive international tender, recognized for the adaptability, scalability, and long-term reliability of its technology, as well as its established relationship with Bybanen. Since 2007, Stadler has played a key role in the tram network’s development, having delivered Variobahn trams and provided vehicle and signalling equipment across previous construction phases.

Albrecht Teich, Managing Director of Stadler Signalling Germany, noted, “This latest contract reaffirms confidence in our technology and long-term support capabilities. It also highlights the modular, future-ready nature of our solutions that are purpose-built for growing urban transit networks.”

Scheduled to begin on September 1, 2025, the project will see Stadler supply a broad array of systems including track circuits, wheel sensors, train protection and identification technology, switch point heaters, and a fully equipped operations control center featuring simulation capabilities. All systems will be developed and produced at Stadler’s dedicated signalling facility in Braunschweig, Germany.

Arve Tjønn Rinde, Project Director at Bybanen Utbygging, emphasized the importance of the partnership: “Signalling is a vital component in this expansion, and working early in the process with a globally recognized provider like Stadler allows us to align on both quality and future growth potential.”
