St Asaph schoolchildren help launch Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s campaign ‘Let’s Stop the Block’

Over 160 schoolchildren from all over St Asaph have been designing Super Heroes as part of Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s campaign ‘Let’s Stop the Block’.

WALES, 20-11-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — Junior and infant pupils from Ysgol Esgob Morgan, Ysgol Twm o’r Nant and Ysgol Dewi Sant were asked to design a character, give them a name and assign them super powers and special skills to help Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water reduce the number of blocked sewage pipes in the area.

The winning entry was designed by Erin Jones, aged nine, from Ysgol Esgob Morgan. Erin was presented with her high street vouchers at her school assembly today (Tuesday 18 November) along with the runners-up.

Let’s Stop the Block is an awareness campaign aimed to show customers how they can do their bit to stop sewer blockages from causing flooding in their homes and communities. Blocked sewers cost Welsh Water over £7million pounds a year to clear and lead to huge human misery, damage to homes and businesses, and can cause major pollution to our beautiful rivers, beaches and wider environment in Wales.

Rhodri Sellers, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s education teacher, said: “The standard of entries was very high and we spent a lot of time narrowing it down to 16 entries which stood out. All three schools were represented in the final 16. Mr Peter Scott the mayor of St Asaph was our Simon Cowell and he chose the winning entry.”

Mayor of St Asaph, Cllr Peter Scott, said: “I was delighted to be asked to help judge the entries. I was immediately drawn to the winning entry because of its simplicity and how it incorporated the messages given during the stop the block campaign here in St Asaph. The standard of work was very high and I’d like to congratulate our winner.”

Finalist posters will be displayed in the local St Asaph Co-operative Store on World Toilet Day (19 November 2014) for one week.
