Building on its reusable Euro-pallet–sized boxes introduced in 2021, the company has equipped around 300 containers with GPS trackers from SmartMakers. These units capture real-time location, temperature, humidity, and acceleration data, feeding an IoT platform that drives more efficient, sustainable, and secure logistics. (PRESS RELEASE) SCHWEINFURT, 30-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Schaeffler is enhancing the digital traceability of its large-size bearing logistics by integrating GPS-based positioning into its established smart box system. As part of a proof-of-concept for wind power applications, the company will equip its reusable transport containers with GPS trackers, enabling precise product location and enriched environmental monitoring throughout the supply chain.

Launched in 2021, Schaeffler’s smart boxes are modular, Euro-pallet–sized containers designed for large-diameter rolling bearings. Their reusable nature reduces packaging waste, simplifies storage, and streamlines return logistics. The addition of GPS units—sourced from German IoT provider SmartMakers—will track not only location but also temperature, humidity, and acceleration, providing insights into handling and environmental conditions.

Around 300 GPS trackers are already deployed across Schaeffler’s wind power bearing transports. These devices relay data at regular intervals to a centralized IoT platform, enabling data-driven management of turnaround times, downtimes, and return flows. Tested and refined over two years in live operations, this combined modular packaging and IoT solution offers a scalable model for optimizing industrial freight logistics.
