Ørsted Kicks Off Offshore Construction for Greater Changhua 2b and 4 Wind Farms in Taiwan

(IN BRIEF) Ørsted has officially launched offshore construction for the Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms, marking a major step forward in Taiwan’s clean energy transition. With an output of 920 MW, these wind farms will play a pivotal role in meeting the nation’s energy goals while introducing innovative piling-free suction bucket jacket foundation technology to the Asia-Pacific region.

(PRESS RELEASE) FREDERICIA, 19-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — In a significant move towards bolstering Taiwan’s renewable energy landscape, Ørsted has commenced offshore construction for the Greater Changhua 2b and 4 wind farms. With a total capacity of 920 MW, the project will contribute significantly to Taiwan’s transition to a low-carbon economy. This initiative also marks Ørsted’s continued commitment to offshore wind energy, reinforcing its leadership in the global green energy sector.

Located 35 to 60 kilometers off the coast of Changhua County, Taiwan, the Greater Changhua 2b and 4 wind farms will be the first in the Asia-Pacific region to employ suction bucket jacket foundation technology. This advanced, piling-free solution offers both environmental and operational benefits, enabling more efficient installation and reduced impact on the seabed.

The project was awarded to Ørsted in June 2018. Following the final investment decision in March 2023, the company has moved forward with the manufacturing of essential components, civil work for the onshore substation, and vessel mobilization in preparation for the offshore phase of construction.

Per Mejnert Kristensen, President of Region APAC at Ørsted, highlighted the significance of the project, saying, “The commencement of offshore construction for the Greater Changhua 2b and 4 wind farms underscores Ørsted’s continued dedication to large-scale offshore wind development in Taiwan.” He continued, “As the first offshore wind farms in Taiwan backed by a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA), these projects not only highlight the trust in Ørsted’s technical expertise but also set a new benchmark for long-term partnerships between businesses and the renewable energy sector.”

Ørsted’s strategic collaboration with a corporate customer, secured in July 2020, ensures the full offtake of energy produced from these wind farms, marking another important step in the company’s growth in Taiwan and its efforts to support the global renewable energy transition.

The offshore installation of the wind farms is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, with full grid connection scheduled for 2026. Once operational, Ørsted will have nearly 2 GW of offshore wind capacity in Taiwan, enough to power approximately two million Taiwanese households.

Ørsted’s global offshore wind portfolio currently stands at 9.9 GW of installed capacity across three continents, with another 8.4 GW under construction. This growth positions Ørsted as a key player in the global transition to renewable energy.
