Neste’s Renewable Diesel Enables Helsinki Airport to Achieve Net-Zero Emissions Certification

Neste’s Renewable Diesel Enables Helsinki Airport to Achieve Net-Zero Emissions Certification

(IN BRIEF) Neste’s renewable diesel has played a pivotal role in helping Finavia’s Helsinki Airport become the fifth facility in Finland to achieve net-zero emissions in its operations, under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. With 90% average greenhouse gas reductions compared to fossil diesel, Neste MY Renewable Diesel has proven essential for decarbonizing heavy airport machinery without additional infrastructure changes. Neste and Finavia’s collaboration demonstrates how practical, scalable climate solutions can support the aviation sector’s transition to net zero.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 10-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Neste is proud to announce that its long-standing collaboration with Finavia has helped Helsinki Airport achieve net-zero carbon emissions in its own operations, making it the fifth Finavia airport to receive this prestigious recognition under the international Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. The achievement underscores Neste’s role in supporting the decarbonization of airport operations through the use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel™, a fuel produced entirely from 100% waste and residues.

Since 2024, Neste’s renewable diesel has powered Helsinki Airport’s machinery and emergency generators, playing a central role in helping Finavia reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 90% compared to fossil diesel over the fuel’s life cycle. The fuel has proven to be a reliable and scalable solution in hard-to-electrify sectors such as heavy airport machinery, including high-powered sweepers and snowplows.

“This achievement by Helsinki Airport is a testament to what is possible when ambitious climate goals are paired with practical and immediate solutions,” said Joni Pihlström, Vice President, B2B Sales, Marketing & Services at Neste. “We are proud to be a trusted partner in Finavia’s journey toward net-zero, and we believe this serves as a model for how airports and industries worldwide can accelerate their climate action.”

Machinery operations account for roughly 80% of total fuel use across Finavia’s network of 20 airports. The transition to Neste MY Renewable Diesel has allowed Finavia to significantly cut emissions without investing in new equipment or infrastructure—highlighting the cost-efficiency and compatibility of the solution with existing systems.

Helsinki Airport’s net-zero certification required meeting strict criteria under the ACA program: reducing CO₂ emissions by at least 90%, neutralizing residual emissions, and verifying results through an independent third party. With the Lapland airports already certified in 2023 and Helsinki now joining them, Finavia plans to extend the use of Neste’s renewable diesel to all its airports by the end of 2025.

“Finavia has shown exceptional leadership in climate responsibility,” added Pihlström. “This partnership exemplifies how low-emission solutions like Neste MY Renewable Diesel can deliver both immediate impact and long-term value.”

As the world’s leading producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, Neste remains committed to enabling customers in the transport, aviation, and logistics sectors to significantly reduce their carbon footprint and support the global transition to a circular economy.
