Loughborough coach George Bates appointed as Team UK Head Coach for Wheelchair Basketball at Invictus Games

(IN BRIEF) George Bates, the current Head Coach of Loughborough Lightning Wheelchair Basketball, has been appointed as the Team UK Head Coach for Wheelchair Basketball at the upcoming Invictus Games. The Invictus Games is a multi-sport international competition for wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women. Bates, who has a successful coaching and playing career, will lead the side in Düsseldorf, Germany, in September 2023. The Games were initiated in 2014 by Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, to support the rehabilitation of injured service personnel through the power of sport.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 26-Apr-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Loughborough’s George Bates has been appointed Team UK Head Coach for Wheelchair Basketball for the upcoming Invictus Games.

The current Head Coach of Loughborough Lightning Wheelchair Basketball will lead the side at this year’s Games – the sixth of all time –, in Düsseldorf, Germany in September.

The Invictus Games, initiated in 2014 by Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, is a multi-sport international competition that provides wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women recognition in society by supporting their path in rehabilitation through the power of sport.

Bates, 28, already holds a great pedigree as a Head Coach, including leading Lightning to the inaugural Women’s Premier League title last May.

“I’m incredibly proud to have been appointed into this role,” he said.

“After being part of the pre-selection camps in Sheffield, I was asked to lead the team and I jumped at the chance.

“At its very heart, wheelchair basketball is a sport that serves those going through rehabilitation and recovery so to play my part in the broader recreational movement for military veterans is a real honour.

“We have a team full of brilliant servicemen and women who I believe can achieve great things both on and off the court. We’re all genuinely excited to see what we can deliver at the Games on the world stage.”

Bates’ fine reputation as a Head Coach has continued this campaign as Lightning currently lead the Women’s Premier League standings after six games.

Prior to coaching, George also enjoyed a successful professional playing career in England, Spain, and Italy. He also represented Great Britain numerous times, winning the World Championships in 2018, and the European Championships in 2019.

The Invictus Games will take place in Düsseldorf, Germany, between 9-16 September 2023.
