Leica Geosystems and Liebherr Expand Partnership With Factory Integrated Machine Control for Generation 8 Excavators

(IN BRIEF) Leica Geosystems and Liebherr are extending their collaboration by integrating Leica’s sensor chain as a standard factory feature in Liebherr’s Generation 8 excavators, providing built-in 2D machine control and enabling seamless upgrades to advanced 3D solutions. The move removes the need for aftermarket installation, reduces downtime, and supports digital construction workflows, with production beginning in spring and deliveries expected shortly thereafter. The partnership aims to deliver a more streamlined ownership experience while helping contractors adopt increasingly automated and data-driven jobsite technologies.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 24-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, and Liebherr have announced an expanded partnership that will see Leica Geosystems’ sensor technology integrated directly at the factory into Liebherr’s Generation 8 mobile and crawler excavators. The collaboration makes the sensor chain a standard feature, enabling contractors to benefit from productivity-enhancing capabilities immediately upon delivery while providing a straightforward path to advanced 3D machine control.

The factory-installed solution forms the technological backbone for Liebherr’s guidance and assistance systems, including on-board weighing and bucket fill assist functions. Operators will have access to intuitive 2D machine control through the Liebherr in-cab display, combining the manufacturer’s interface with Leica Geosystems’ established user environment for configuration and calibration.

The integration eliminates the need for post-purchase installation in most cases, helping customers avoid additional downtime and ensuring machines are ready for operation as soon as they arrive on site. For contractors seeking higher levels of automation, the excavators can be specified with 3D-ready configurations or full 3D machine control directly from the factory, including options such as dual GNSS setups and Leica’s MC1 3D platform. Machines ordered with 3D-ready capability can be upgraded later without interrupting operations.

Production of the new configuration is scheduled to begin in the spring, with initial deliveries expected soon after. The initiative reflects a shared goal of simplifying equipment ownership while supporting the construction sector’s increasing demand for digitalisation, automation, and precision workflows.
