Landis+Gyr Upgrades TEPCO PG’s AMI: Transforming Smart Meters into a Global IoT Hub for a Smarter Energy Future

Landis+Gyr Upgrades TEPCO PG’s AMI: Transforming Smart Meters into a Global IoT Hub for a Smarter Energy Future

(IN BRIEF) Landis+Gyr has completed a major upgrade to the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) at TEPCO Power Grid, Inc., in Tokyo, Japan, on April 2, 2025. The upgrades enable smart meters to serve as central communication hubs, connecting various devices—such as gas and water meters, EV chargers, battery storage, and solar panel inverters—to the network. This project, executed in close collaboration with TEPCO PG, included a seamless transition to a new virtualized IT infrastructure without any service disruptions to retail utilities that rely on 30-minute interval readings for accurate energy forecasting. The firmware enhancements now allow DERMS providers and asset owners to both monitor and control distributed energy resources (DERs) across TEPCO PG’s network securely. The system is built on the open, standards-based Wi-SUN Enhanced HAN technology, marking one of its first commercial applications globally. Future plans involve further upgrading the network to incorporate a Wi-SUN FAN and cellular-based framework, aiming to enhance system bandwidth, interoperability, and cost efficiency, and thus accelerate the move toward a smarter energy future while expanding one of the world’s largest AMI/IoT platforms.

(PRESS RELEASE) CHAM, 3-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Landis+Gyr (SIX: LAND) has successfully completed significant upgrades to the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) for electric metering at TEPCO Power Grid, Inc. (TEPCO PG) in Tokyo, Japan, on April 2, 2025. This upgrade transforms the smart meter into a versatile communication hub that now connects a range of other devices—including gas and water meters, EV chargers, battery storage systems, and solar panel inverters—to the AMI network. The project was a result of a close collaboration between TEPCO PG and Landis+Gyr, and involved a seamless migration to a new virtualized IT infrastructure without any interruption to service for the numerous retail utilities that rely on receiving meter readings every 30 minutes to forecast energy demand accurately.

The firmware enhancements enable Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) providers and asset owners to monitor additional assets, particularly distributed energy resources (DERs) across TEPCO PG’s extensive distribution network, while also allowing for the secure control of these assets through the AMI system. The upgraded system utilizes Wi-SUN Enhanced HAN, an open, standards-based technology that facilitates minimal-investment participation by device and communication module providers. Notably, this deployment is among the first commercial applications of Wi-SUN Enhanced HAN globally.

Looking ahead, Landis+Gyr will continue its partnership with TEPCO PG to transition toward a next-generation AMI system. Future upgrades will incorporate a Wi-SUN FAN and cellular-based network to create a fully open and standards-based communication framework. This evolution will increase the system’s bandwidth and flexibility, unlocking the full potential of Wi-SUN, enhancing interoperability with other technologies, reducing costs, and spurring further innovation. Ultimately, these advancements are set to accelerate the journey toward a smart energy future while bolstering the capabilities of one of the world’s largest AMI/IoT platforms.
