KPN Introduces Real Time Text for All Mobile Customers, Leading Accessibility Innovation in Europe

(IN BRIEF) KPN has become the first European provider to offer Real Time Text (RTT) to all its mobile customers, allowing for real-time text messaging during phone calls. This new feature, which is initially available to Samsung users, enhances communication for people with speech or hearing impairments and offers a vital tool for communicating with emergency services. KPN’s initiative supports the European Accessibility Act and continues its commitment to inclusivity, building on decades of services for the deaf and hard of hearing, including KPN Teletolk. RTT is part of KPN’s broader efforts to create a more inclusive, accessible internet and digital experience for all.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 3-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — KPN has become the first European provider to offer Real Time Text (RTT) technology to all its mobile customers, enabling real-time messaging during phone calls. With a recent software release, KPN customers using Samsung devices can now take advantage of this innovative feature, with support for other manufacturers coming soon.

RTT allows users to send text messages during an ongoing phone call, enhancing communication without the need to wait for the recipient to pick up. While RTT has been available in Canada and the US, KPN is now the first to offer it in the Netherlands. This feature not only facilitates real-time text exchanges during calls but also serves as a crucial tool for communicating with emergency services in situations where speaking is not possible. Additionally, it provides an inclusive solution for people with speech or hearing impairments.

To use RTT, the caller can simply press the Real Time Text button during or before a call, bringing up an on-screen keyboard. Both the caller and the recipient can send text messages instantly, with the text appearing live on the recipient’s screen as it is typed, without needing to press a send button.

By introducing RTT, KPN is taking proactive steps to meet the European Accessibility Act (EAA), which aims to enhance the accessibility of telecommunications services. Since not all device manufacturers and providers are ready to support RTT yet, the feature is currently available only for KPN customers.

KPN has a long history of promoting accessibility. Since 1983, KPN has enabled text-based communication for the deaf and hard of hearing through text mediation. This commitment aligns with KPN’s belief in equal access to telephony for everyone, a principle enshrined in the Telecommunications Act since 2012. KPN also provides services such as KPN Teletolk, allowing for sign language communication.

Marieke Snoep, member of the Board of Directors at KPN, said, “Real Time Text is a valuable addition to our accessibility services. It supports our mission for a Better Internet—one that is not only fast and stable but also safe, green, and inclusive. Everyone must be able to participate, and RTT ensures that.”

Additionally, KPN continues to make its TV and entertainment platform, KPN TV+, increasingly accessible. Features such as voice command control, multilingual subtitles for NPO and RTL, and ten channels with spoken subtitles and audio descriptions further support KPN’s accessibility initiatives. The platform also includes a talk-back feature, providing audio feedback while navigating menus, making it more user-friendly for individuals with visual impairments.
