Koppö Energia Partners with thyssenkrupp Uhde for E-Methanol Plant Using Green Hydrogen and CO2

(IN BRIEF) Koppö Energia has chosen thyssenkrupp Uhde’s green methanol technology for its e-methanol plant in Kristinestad, Finland, part of a power-to-x project aimed at producing sustainable e-methanol for maritime and e-gasoline markets. This plant will capture CO2 and use renewable hydrogen to create green methanol, offering significant economic and environmental advantages. The project is a major step towards supporting the green energy transition.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 7-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Koppö Energia Oy has selected thyssenkrupp Uhde’s advanced uhde® green methanol technology for the design of a new e-methanol plant in Kristinestad, Finland. This plant is part of Koppö Energia’s ambitious power-to-x (P2X) project, which will produce 450 metric tons per day (mtpd) of e-methanol in various grades. The product will serve key markets including maritime and e-gasoline fuels.

Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “We are honored that our technology and expertise will play a vital role in Koppö Energia’s pioneering project. This collaboration showcases the potential of cross-industry cooperation in establishing green methanol as a significant fuel source.”

E-methanol, produced using green hydrogen from renewable electricity and CO2 captured from a waste incineration facility in Vaasa, Finland, significantly reduces the carbon footprint compared to traditional grey methanol. CO2 will be liquefied and transported to the P2X facility by truck for hydrogenation into e-methanol. The necessary renewable hydrogen will be generated by a 200MW water electrolysis plant.

Thomas Zirngibl, Director at Koppö Energia, added, “We are excited to partner with thyssenkrupp Uhde, whose technology and integration expertise will ensure a seamless project delivery.”

Economic and Ecological Benefits

The uhde® green methanol technology offers high carbon and hydrogen efficiencies, which improve the project’s financial viability. Thanks to its patented process, thyssenkrupp Uhde’s methanol plants feature a low purge gas rate, minimizing the carbon intensity of the facility.
