DUBLIN, 26-Mar-2018 — /EuropaWire/ — Trinity students can now apply for the Irish Universities Association (IUA) scholarships for summer school or internships in Beijing, China in 2018. To further strengthen the links between our countries, the IUA and China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) have developed a study and internship summer program in China for Irish students.

Trinity has a longstanding relationship with China which dates to the Mission to the Far East and the establishment of Trinity College Fuzhou. The Dublin University Far Eastern Mission (founded in 1886) established Trinity College Fuzhou in 1907, now the Fuzhou Foreign Language School. Later, Trinity was one of the first universities in the European Union to welcome Chinese students to its campus, with students from Beijing and Nanjing studying in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Today, engagement between Trinity and China is continuously deepening in terms of student recruitment, research collaborations, university partnerships, student mobility and general engagement, including through the establishment of the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies. Trinity has a growing number of Chinese students who study a range of programmes at the university.

Overall, over 570 Irish students studied in China in 2016 across a number of disciplines and in various cities. The IUA will offer a €1,000 scholarship to 10 successful applicants of Irish Universities to help cover travel expenses to and from China. Applicants must be 18 years or over and the program and scholarship is open to applicants from all disciplines. The pilot summer internship programme will be hosted at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing for summer 2018.

Applications for the scholarship will open on Friday 30th March and will close on Friday 27th April 2018.

This scholarship is the product of a partnership agreement signed in 2017, between the IUA and CEAIE to further develop co-operation between the higher education systems in China and in Ireland.

Further details regarding the programme description and benefits to Trinity Students may be found on the IUA website.
