Inter IKEA Group launches large-scale electric heavy transport project in Italy with LC3 Trasporti and Mercedes-Benz Trucks

IKEA intensiviert Maßnahmen zum CO2-freien Straßengüterverkehr in Italien
IKEA accelerates the decarbonization of road transport in Italy

(IN BRIEF) Inter IKEA Group has launched its first fully electrified heavy road transport project in Italy in partnership with LC3 Trasporti and Mercedes-Benz Trucks, beginning with two electric trucks and scaling up to more than ten Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 vehicles by Q3 2026. The initiative will enable over 1.2 million kilometers of zero-emission transport annually for container movements between Genoa, La Spezia, and the Piacenza Distribution Center, as well as store deliveries across Northern Italy, while also reducing noise pollution. The project reinforces IKEA’s commitment to phasing out fossil fuels in logistics and demonstrates how cross-sector collaboration can accelerate the decarbonization of heavy transport.

(PRESS RELEASE) LEINFELDEN-ECHTERDINGEN / GUBBIO, 4-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Inter IKEA Group has launched its first fully electrified heavy road transport initiative in Italy, marking a major milestone in the company’s efforts to decarbonize logistics and reshape long-distance freight operations. Developed in partnership with LC3 Trasporti and Mercedes-Benz Trucks, the project is designed to accelerate the transition to zero-emission transport ahead of European regulatory timelines while creating a quieter, more sustainable logistics system.

Officially commencing in October, the programme represents the beginning of a broader electrification strategy for IKEA’s Italian transport network. The initiative follows a phased implementation approach, starting with two battery-electric vehicles already in service and expanding to more than ten Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks by the third quarter of 2026. These vehicles will be deployed primarily for container movements between the ports of Genoa and La Spezia and the Piacenza Distribution Center, as well as for daily store deliveries across Northern Italy from the same hub.

Once the full fleet is operational, the project is expected to cover more than 1.2 million kilometers per year with zero tailpipe emissions, eliminating a significant volume of CO₂ associated with IKEA’s road transport activities in Italy. By combining LC3 Trasporti’s operational expertise and long-standing commitment to sustainable logistics with the advanced electric technology of the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600, IKEA aims to set a new benchmark for low-carbon freight solutions.

Beyond climate benefits, the shift to electric trucks will also eliminate noise pollution from heavy vehicles, an important advantage for night-time deliveries in urban and residential areas. This is expected to improve local quality of life while maintaining efficient retail operations.

The project reinforces IKEA’s broader commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and internal combustion engines, even in heavy-duty transport, which remains one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonize.

Ewelina Taylor, Global Transport Manager at Inter IKEA Group, described the initiative as a decisive step toward reducing the company’s transport-related climate footprint in Italy. She highlighted that the collaboration with LC3 Trasporti and Mercedes-Benz Trucks has enabled the partners to design an optimized operational model that lowers overall costs while contributing to cleaner, quieter logistics, in line with IKEA’s mission of creating a better everyday life.

Michele Ambrogi, Commercial Director of LC3 Trasporti, emphasized that the project represents a turning point for the company and for the sector as a whole. He stated that the energy transition requires scalable, real-world solutions rather than isolated pilot projects, and that cross-industry collaboration is essential to achieving meaningful change.

Maurizio Pompei, CEO of Daimler Truck Italia, noted that the eActros 600 reflects years of development aimed at transforming road freight transport. He described the deployment of the vehicle in a large-scale, real-world logistics project as clear evidence that the energy transition is already underway, demonstrating how technological innovation can align with environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.
