Infineon Develops World’s First 300 mm Power GaN Technology, Boosting Semiconductor Efficiency

(IN BRIEF) Infineon Technologies has pioneered the world’s first 300 mm power gallium nitride (GaN) wafer technology, enhancing production efficiency by offering 2.3 times more chips per wafer compared to the previous 200 mm process. This breakthrough will accelerate GaN adoption across industries such as automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics. The 300 mm GaN technology utilizes Infineon’s existing silicon manufacturing infrastructure, helping to lower costs and improve scalability. This innovation positions Infineon as a leader in the rapidly growing GaN market, which is projected to reach several billion dollars by the decade’s end.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH/VILLACH, 11-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Infineon Technologies has announced the development of the world’s first 300 mm power gallium nitride (GaN) wafer technology, marking a major advancement in the semiconductor industry. This breakthrough, achieved within Infineon’s existing high-volume manufacturing infrastructure, will significantly enhance the GaN market by increasing production efficiency and lowering costs over time, helping to bring GaN to cost parity with silicon.

GaN-based semiconductors are increasingly used in sectors like automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics, offering improved efficiency, smaller size, and lighter weight compared to traditional silicon-based components. The 300 mm GaN wafers will provide 2.3 times more chips per wafer than the older 200 mm process, improving scalability and supply stability.

Infineon’s CEO, Jochen Hanebeck, emphasized that this innovation reinforces Infineon’s leadership in power systems and its ability to leverage silicon, silicon carbide, and GaN technologies. The 300 mm GaN technology will be publicly showcased at the electronica trade show in November 2024, further positioning Infineon to lead the rapidly growing GaN market, projected to be worth billions by the end of the decade.
