Iberdrola Takes Delivery of XXL Monopiles from Navantia–Windar Facility for Baltic Sea Windanker Project

(IN BRIEF) Iberdrola has received new XXL monopiles for its 315 MW Windanker offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, marking the second major supply under its Navantia–Windar Renovables partnership after East Anglia THREE. Built at a €36 million–upgraded facility in Fene, each 84 m × 10 m monopile weighs up to 2,100 t. The 2021 framework deal reinforces Iberdrola’s commitment to developing Spain’s offshore wind supply chain and provides stability for long-term local manufacturing. Windanker joins the Wikinger and Baltic Eagle projects in a €3.5 billion, 1,100 MW Baltic Sea hub. The alliance also continues work on 45 monopiles for East Anglia THREE and 95 transition pieces in Avilés. A pioneer since 2014, Iberdrola held 2,470 MW of offshore capacity by mid-2025 and targets 6,500 MW by 2030.

(PRESS RELEASE) BILBAO, 7-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Iberdrola has taken delivery of the latest batch of monopile foundations for its Windanker offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. Manufactured under the Navantia–Windar Renovables alliance at their newly established facility within the Navantia Seanergies shipyard in Fene (A Coruña), these components follow the consortium’s previous contract for East Anglia THREE, extending a strategic collaboration that has generated over €1 billion in orders across the UK, Germany, France, and the USA.

Each monopile, measuring up to 84 m in length, 10 m in diameter, and weighing up to 2,100 t, was produced in a purpose-built factory jointly operated by Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renovables. The site upgrade—supported by a €36 million investment—enabled the handling of 12 m-diameter steel plates, installation of advanced painting booths, and expansion of finished-product storage, while creating some 300 jobs.

This delivery stems from a 2021 framework agreement for XXL monopile foundations, reinforcing Iberdrola’s leadership in nurturing Spain’s offshore wind supply chain and providing the Navantia–Windar consortium with the confidence to establish a dedicated monopile manufacturing hub.

Windanker, set to commence operations in 2026 with 315 MW of capacity via next-generation ~15 MW turbines, forms part of Iberdrola’s Baltic Sea energy hub alongside the commissioned Wikinger (350 MW) and Baltic Eagle (476 MW) farms—together representing a €3.5 billion investment and over 1,100 MW of installed capacity.

“On behalf of Navantia, we thank Iberdrola for reaffirming its trust in Navantia Seanergies and Windar,” said Ricardo Domínguez, President of Navantia. “Since our first offshore wind contract in 2014, we have delivered foundations and substations worldwide, strengthening the national supply chain.”

Orlando Alonso, Executive President of Windar Renovables, added, “This order validates the quality and reliability of our products and our nine-year partnership with Navantia Seanergies. We remain committed to leading renewable energy developments across Europe and beyond.”

Álvaro Martínez, Director of Offshore Wind Power at Iberdrola, remarked, “This delivery underscores our dedication to Spain’s industrial ecosystem. Through long-term agreements with local partners, we foster stability, international visibility, and sustained employment while advancing offshore wind globally.”

Meanwhile, the Navantia–Windar consortium continues manufacturing 45 monopiles for Iberdrola’s East Anglia THREE project in UK waters, part of the broader 2,900 MW East Anglia Hub, with Windar Renovables also producing 95 transition pieces at its Avilés (Asturias) facility.

A pioneer in offshore wind since commissioning West of Duddon Sands in 2014, Iberdrola had over 2,470 MW of installed offshore capacity by mid-2025 and aims to reach 6,500 MW by 2030 through major global investments.
