(IN BRIEF) Iberdrola has announced a year-long nationwide programme to celebrate its 125th anniversary, featuring exhibitions, music festivals, public events and the illumination of landmark buildings across Spain. Under the theme “125 light years,” the initiative reflects the company’s historical evolution, its social and economic impact, and its ambition to continue contributing to sustainable development and innovation in the energy sector.

(PRESS RELEASE) BILBAO, 12-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Iberdrola has unveiled a nationwide programme to mark its 125th anniversary, inviting society at large to take part in a year-long celebration of the company’s history, innovation and future ambitions. Under the slogan “125 light years”, the initiative will roll out across Spain over the next twelve months, combining technology and art exhibitions, music festivals, social initiatives and the illumination of emblematic buildings.

Founded in Bilbao in July 1901 as Hidroeléctrica Ibérica, Iberdrola has evolved into Europe’s largest electricity company by market capitalisation and one of the world’s leading energy groups. Over the past 25 years in particular, the company’s international expansion has transformed it into a global player serving around 100 million people. Today, Iberdrola’s investments and acquisitions support approximately 120,000 jobs in Spain and more than half a million worldwide, reinforcing its role as a driver of economic and social progress through electrification.

The anniversary programme will unfold across multiple regions of Spain. From April, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum will host an exhibition linked to the reopening of the museum following its extension. The exhibition will feature selected works from Iberdrola’s collection, tracing the company’s evolution and historical milestones through images and artistic interpretations.

The central institutional event commemorating Iberdrola’s founding will take place in June at Torre Iberdrola in Bilbao. The celebration will include the presentation of a commemorative 125th anniversary book, accompanied by performances from the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and the Bilbao Choral Society. The event will also feature a large-scale public light show and live music performances by nationally and internationally recognised artists.

Music will also take centre stage at two major festivals. In June, Iberdrola Music in Madrid will host concerts featuring artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Manuel Carrasco and Ana Mena, while a second festival will follow in November at the Roig Arena in Valencia, with its line-up to be announced. Proceeds from ticket sales will be allocated to social projects.

Beyond music and exhibitions, the Roig Arena will host a dedicated forum examining Iberdrola’s social impact and its role as a catalyst for development over the past 125 years. The programme will include expert panels and presentations by international speakers.

In keeping with its open and inclusive approach, Iberdrola will also present an interactive exhibition in Madrid at CentroCentro between September and October. The exhibition will explore the evolution of electrical technology through historical artefacts, models, audiovisual material, virtual reality experiences and family-friendly activities designed to engage audiences of all ages.

Throughout 2026, Iberdrola will illuminate a different iconic building each month using advanced, energy-efficient lighting technology. The initiative will begin with the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace in Madrid, continue with landmarks such as Valencia’s Miguelete Tower, and conclude with the illumination of the Roman theatre and amphitheatre in Mérida and the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Begoña in Bilbao.

To centralise information and enable public access, Iberdrola will soon launch a dedicated website, www.125.iberdrola.com, featuring the full anniversary calendar and a collection of audiovisual content. Through personal stories and testimonials, the platform will highlight the people behind Iberdrola’s 125-year journey and the company’s ongoing commitment to building a more sustainable, innovative and inclusive energy future.
