Iberdrola Germany Advances Industrial Decarbonisation with 65 MW Solar Project

Planta fotovoltaica

(IN BRIEF) Iberdrola Germany has brought a 65 MWp solar power plant online in Saxony-Anhalt to supply renewable electricity for Salzgitter AG’s green steel production. The facility operates under a 15-year PPA covering 900 GWh of power and will generate around 60 GWh annually, avoiding more than 23,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. The project highlights how long-term renewable energy partnerships can support the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries while delivering regional economic benefits.

(PRESS RELEASE) BILBAO, 7-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Iberdrola Germany has commissioned a new 65-megawatt peak (MWp) photovoltaic power plant in Saxony-Anhalt, strengthening the link between renewable energy generation and the decarbonisation of heavy industry. The electricity produced at the site will be used exclusively to support green steel production by Salzgitter AG.

The solar park forms part of a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) between Iberdrola Germany and Salzgitter AG, under which approximately 900 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable electricity will be supplied over the contract period. Through this long-term arrangement, Salzgitter AG will source 100 percent renewable power for key stages of its steelmaking transformation.

Covering an area of around 45 hectares, equivalent to roughly 60 football pitches, the solar installation consists of more than 92,000 photovoltaic modules. The facility is expected to generate approximately 60 GWh of electricity annually, enough to meet the average power demand of more than 20,000 households.

Beyond its industrial application, the project delivers measurable environmental benefits. Annual operation of the plant is expected to avoid over 23,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, contributing directly to climate targets while demonstrating how electrification can reduce emissions in energy-intensive sectors such as steel production.

Felipe Montero, Managing Director of Iberdrola Germany, said the project represents a further step in expanding the company’s onshore renewable portfolio in Germany. He highlighted the role of long-term industrial partnerships in turning energy transition goals into tangible outcomes, noting that collaboration with Salzgitter AG reflects a shared commitment to sustainable transformation.

For Salzgitter AG, the solar plant supports the company’s SALCOS® – Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking programme, which aims to fundamentally reduce emissions across steel production. Ralph Schaper, Head of Energy Management at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, said reliable partnerships and renewable energy supply are critical enablers for implementing low-carbon processes and products at scale.

Construction of the solar park was delivered through a coordinated, multi-phase approach involving specialist partners including Solarpro, P&Q, and EMT, alongside regional companies. The project has contributed to local economic activity and employment while reinforcing the role of renewable infrastructure in regional development.
