(PRESS RELEASE) FRANKFURT, 2-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — KfW IPEX-Bank has committed EUR 35 million in financing to support the construction of two eco-friendly, 1,200 TEU container feeder ships for Finnish shipping company Langh Ship. These newbuild vessels are designed with advanced environmental features in mind. They are powered by a two-stroke, slow-speed main engine from MAN, optimised for maximum fuel efficiency. In addition, Langh Ship’s sister company, Langh Tech, is contributing its expertise in green technologies by providing hybrid scrubbers and a Ballast Water Management System (BWMS).

One of the standout technical features of these ships is the incorporation of an exhaust gas cleaning system that is prepped for the future installation of an Onboard Carbon Capture System. This innovative system, developed by Langh Tech, captures CO₂ directly from the exhaust, achieving emission reductions between 20 and 50 percent. The captured CO₂ is chemically transformed into sodium carbonate, a product that can be repurposed in various industrial processes, thereby promoting a circular economy and advancing decarbonisation efforts across sectors.

Andreas Ufer, a member of the Management Board at KfW IPEX-Bank, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are very glad to have won Langh Ship as a new customer. With this financing we underline our commitment to support innovative vessels that advance decarbonisation in the European maritime sector.” The new ships will be chartered by UK-based ocean transport company Borchard Lines.
