Global Omnium, Telefónica Tech, and Google Cloud Unite to Revolutionize Water Management with AI

(IN BRIEF) Global Omnium has partnered with Telefónica Tech and Google Cloud in a strategic alliance aimed at transforming the water sector through artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data analytics. The partnership has already led to the launch of an AI-powered marine monitoring system that protects Posidonia meadows along the Mediterranean coast. Building on past digital initiatives, this collaboration positions Global Omnium for a new phase of innovation focused on sustainability, efficiency, and enhanced customer service.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 24-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Global Omnium, Telefónica Tech, and Google Cloud have joined forces in a groundbreaking partnership that aims to usher in a new era of digital innovation in the water sector. The collaboration, announced today, combines the strengths of artificial intelligence, advanced data analytics, and scalable cloud infrastructure to enhance the efficiency, traceability, and sustainability of water management systems.

The alliance is already bearing fruit. In one of its first real-world applications, the partners have implemented an AI-driven coastal surveillance and marine environmental monitoring system focused on the conservation of Posidonia oceanica—a vital seagrass species endemic to the Mediterranean. By leveraging underwater video analytics, the system detects threats and assesses the health of Posidonia meadows, enabling targeted protective measures.

This innovative project highlights the alliance’s broader ambition: redefining the future of water management through predictive, data-rich solutions. The collaboration will enable Global Omnium to accelerate its digital evolution—one that began more than a decade ago—with improved forecasting, real-time insights, and increased business continuity.

Telefónica Tech will facilitate the migration of Global Omnium’s workloads to Google Cloud, offering flexibility, resilience, and cloud-native capabilities backed by certified professionals. This technical leap will allow Global Omnium to scale operations, gain agility, and strengthen its digital backbone.

Dionisio García Comín, CEO of Global Omnium, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership: “This agreement enables a fundamental shift in how we approach technology within our organization. Through AI and data analytics, we can operate more proactively and efficiently, delivering a superior experience to our customers.”

Daniel Aldea, CEO of Altostratus (part of Telefónica Tech), added: “Our extensive cloud expertise allows us to deliver the right solutions tailored to each customer’s needs. This partnership underscores Telefónica Tech’s ongoing commitment to supporting Global Omnium’s digital transformation journey.”

Isaac Hernández, Country Manager for Google Cloud Spain, noted: “We are thrilled to see Global Omnium utilizing Google Cloud’s AI and data solutions to drive sustainability and innovation. Their work is a testament to how technology can elevate both operational excellence and environmental stewardship.”

This new strategic alliance builds upon an earlier agreement between Global Omnium and Telefónica Tech dating back to 2021, which connected more than 450,000 water meters using NB-IoT technology. Today’s announcement signals the next phase of collaboration, one focused on redefining the future of smart water systems and environmental conservation.
