Gasum Expands Biogas Refueling Network with New Station in Joensuu, Finland

Gasum Expands Biogas Refueling Network with New Station in Joensuu, Finland

(IN BRIEF) Gasum is expanding its biogas refueling network by acquiring a filling station in Joensuu, Finland, from Wega Group. The station, set to be fully operated by Gasum starting January 2025, currently offers compressed biogas (CBG) for passenger and light commercial vehicles. Gasum plans to upgrade the station with liquefied biogas (LBG) refueling equipment in 2025 to cater to heavy-duty vehicles. This expansion supports Gasum’s goal of increasing biogas availability across Finland, addressing growing demand, especially in low-emission transport like Joensuu’s new gas-powered buses. Gasum aims to significantly boost its renewable gas supply in the Nordic market by 2027.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 18-Dec-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum, a leading Nordic energy company, is broadening its biogas refueling network by acquiring a filling station in Joensuu, Finland, from Wega Group. The ownership transfer will take place on January 1, 2025, but Wega Group will continue to operate the station for a few weeks to ensure a smooth transition. Biogas deliveries will remain unchanged, sourced from the BioKymppi biogas plant in Kitee.

Currently, the station offers compressed biogas (CBG), suitable for fueling passenger vehicles, buses, and light commercial trucks. However, Gasum plans to enhance the station by adding liquefied biogas (LBG) filling equipment during 2025. This upgrade will allow the station to accommodate heavy-duty vehicles, helping to address the increasing demand for sustainable fuel options.

Juho Kurra, Head of Business, Traffic Finland at Gasum, emphasized the importance of the acquisition:
“Biogas refueling options are limited in Eastern Finland, and there are virtually no LBG stations in the region. This acquisition provides a significant opportunity for Gasum to expand its network eastward. With growing demand for biogas, such as in the City of Joensuu’s investment in low-emission gas buses, we are committed to enhancing the availability of biogas for our customers.”

In addition to the LBG expansion, Gasum is working to improve compressed gas refueling capacity to support the new gas buses in Joensuu’s commuter traffic.

Biogas, a fully renewable fuel, offers an average of 90% lower lifecycle emissions compared to fossil fuels like diesel and petrol. Gasum’s ambitious target is to supply seven terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable gas annually to the Nordic market by 2027, significantly increasing their current output and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.8 million tons each year for their customers.

The Joensuu refueling station is located in the Raatekangas industrial area at Wahlforssinkatu 18 b. Gasum provides a map of all its stations on their website.
