Gasum and Viking Line strengthen FuelEU Maritime pooling with bio-LNG powered vessels on the Baltic Sea

(IN BRIEF) Gasum and Viking Line have partnered to expand FuelEU Maritime pooling by running Viking Glory and Viking Grace on bio-LNG, significantly boosting the supply of compliance credits. Operating between Turku and Stockholm, the vessels now use 50% bio-LNG, cutting emissions while supporting the EU’s decarbonisation goals. Gasum manages the pool and provides bio-LNG, while DNV verifies fuel consumption and emissions data for EU reporting. The collaboration demonstrates how pooling can help shipping companies reduce compliance costs, increase the use of renewable fuels, and accelerate the transition toward a fossil-free maritime future.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 27-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum and Viking Line have deepened their collaboration to support the FuelEU Maritime (FEUM) pooling service, with Viking Line’s two ro-ro vessels, Viking Glory and Viking Grace, now running on bio-LNG to generate additional compliance credits. The move builds on a Letter of Intent signed in late 2024, enabling both companies to advance their shared commitment to cleaner maritime transport.

Operating daily between Turku, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden, the two vessels transport both cargo and passengers across the Baltic Sea. Their predictable routes ensure a steady contribution to Gasum’s pooling system, which is becoming an increasingly important solution as demand for FEUM compliance intensifies toward the end of the year.

“Demand for FEUM pooling is growing so rapidly that Gasum could not meet the required compliance volumes with its own bunkering vessels alone,” explained Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime at Gasum. “That is why this collaboration with Viking Line is central to expanding the scale and stability of our service. Working with such a trusted long-term partner allows us to extend the benefits of pooling to a larger group of shipowners while accelerating maritime decarbonisation.”

For Viking Line, the initiative builds on earlier efforts to offer customers biogas options on the Turku–Stockholm route. “We aim to be among the frontrunners in showing how Finnish maritime can transition to a fossil-free future,” said Jan Hanses, CEO of Viking Line. “This step increases our bio-LNG use to 50 percent on this route, delivering significant emission cuts. Partnering with Gasum helps us play our part in reducing emissions not only for our own operations but also for the wider European maritime industry.”

Gasum’s pooling service enables shipping companies to lower their compliance costs while promoting the adoption of renewable fuels. The system is managed by Gasum, which supplies the bio-LNG and creates over-compliance credits that can be shared with operators still running conventional fuel vessels. To ensure transparency, DNV’s technology is used to collect and validate data on fuel consumption and emissions, with DNV verifying the final pool balance for EU reporting at year-end.

The bio-LNG used in this collaboration is derived from waste-based liquefied biomethane, a fully renewable fuel that reduces lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by around 90% compared to marine gasoil. As part of the EU’s FuelEU Maritime regulation, pooling allows shipping companies to collectively balance emissions reductions, making compliance more accessible while advancing the decarbonisation of Europe’s maritime sector.
