FrieslandCampina Deploys 24/7 Fast-Charge Electric Milk Truck to Reduce CO₂ Emissions

(IN BRIEF) FrieslandCampina has launched a rapid-charging station in Gerkesklooster for its first fully electric milk transport truck, operated by Melkweg | Fritom and active since mid-June 2025. The ceremony featured the Gerkesklooster site team (led by Folkert de Groot), Melkweg | Fritom representatives Hugo Rozenboom and drivers, MilkLogistics’ Marcel Ebbelaar and Roland Bolk, and Marion van Schaik from Global Supply Chain. Initial tests show the truck retains about 30 percent battery life after a standard 9–10-hour route, and the new charger restores full capacity in two hours. Both drivers and farmers praise its quiet, comfortable operation. This pilot supports FrieslandCampina’s goal to cut the 28 million kg of CO₂ produced annually by its diesel fleet—and, if successful, will lead to further expansion of electric vehicles in dairy logistics.

(PRESS RELEASE) AMERSFOORT, 24-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — FrieslandCampina has inaugurated a high-speed charging station in Gerkesklooster for its first fully electric milk transport truck, operated by carrier Melkweg | Fritom and active in the regional milk-collection network since last week. Running around the clock, this vehicle represents a major advance toward greener logistics in the dairy sector.

The opening brought together the Gerkesklooster site team—led by project leader Folkert de Groot—and representatives from Melkweg | Fritom, including Hugo Rozenboom and several drivers. FrieslandCampina MilkLogistics was represented by Marcel Ebbelaar and Roland Bolk, while Marion van Schaik attended on behalf of the Global Supply Chain organization.

Early performance figures are promising: after a typical 9–10-hour route, approximately 30 percent of the battery remains. Thanks to the new fast charger, a complete recharge takes just two hours, ensuring the truck is ready for its next shift. Drivers applaud the smooth acceleration and near-silent operation, and farmers have noted that “milk collection now happens almost silently.”

This initiative aligns seamlessly with FrieslandCampina’s sustainability ambitions. Each year, the company’s milk-transport fleet covers around 32 million kilometres in the Netherlands and consumes roughly 10 million litres of diesel—resulting in 28 million kg of CO₂ emissions. Transitioning to electric transport, supported by favorable energy contracts, offers a compelling low-emission alternative. FrieslandCampina will closely monitor the pilot’s results and, if they remain positive, plans to expand its electric fleet in Gerkesklooster and at other locations.
