Melbourne, Australia, 22-Aug-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Former Royal Naval engineer Rob Steel has been appointed Business Development Director at BMT Design & Technology, where he will support the Managing Director in developing the company’s growth and capabilities in the Australian market.

A Fellow of the Institute of Sales Management and a Member of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), Rob will be leading his new BMT Design & Technology colleagues in areas from strategic marketing to contract negotiation and award, and will also have Corporate Governance responsibilities.

He says: “I bring a curious mind and deep experience of sales and marketing success in an engineering consultancy. My aim is to support the continuing success built up by the current team at BMT Design & Technology.”

Joining BMT in 2003 after 20 years’ service with the Royal Navy, Rob was responsible for developing naval consulting engineering business opportunities within the international market and has successfully led ship design and consultancy campaigns in the UK, Turkey, Australasia, New Zealand, and Norway.

He received the BMT Peter Dowling Award for Innovation for his original work on the Aegir® Auxiliary platform design, which then led to BMT winning design contracts for the Royal Navy’s MARS (Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability) Tanker programme and the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organisation’s logistics and support vessel.

Most recently, Rob led an organisational design review in Australia for the CASG GM Ships Organisation to meet the Naval Shipbuilding Strategy. He was also the business lead for BMT for the family-owned Spanish shipyard, Freire, for their offer into the New Zealand MoD LOSC project, and has been a regular presenter at New Zealand Defence Industry Association conferences.

Peter Behrendt, Managing Director at BMT Design & Technology comments: “I’m delighted to welcome Rob as a fellow Director. He brings a wealth of experience and energy adding to our commitment in providing independent engineering support to defence and commercial maritime projects.”
