Five Luxembourg Banks Join EPI to Launch Wero Instant-Payments App by Mid-2026

(IN BRIEF) EPI has onboarded Spuerkeess, BGL BNP Paribas, BIL, POST Finance and Banque Raiffeisen, who—supported by LUXHUB—will launch the Wero app in Luxembourg by June 2026. Wero offers instant peer-to-peer, invoice, online and point-of-sale payments across Luxembourg and neighboring countries. A phased merchant migration from Payconiq to Wero will run through September 2026. This move advances EPI’s goal of a unified, sovereign European payments ecosystem, leveraging Luxembourg’s financial infrastructure and digital readiness. Upcoming Wero enhancements include e-commerce capabilities, subscription management and loyalty services.

(PRESS RELEASE) BRUSSELS, 17-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Payments Initiative (EPI) today welcomed five leading Luxembourgish banks—Spuerkeess, BGL BNP Paribas, Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (BIL), POST Finance and Banque Raiffeisen—into its membership. Together with technical partner LUXHUB, these institutions have launched their integration projects and will roll out the Wero standalone app by June 2026. Wero enables instant account-to-account transfers, invoice payments, online and in-store purchases across Luxembourg and partner markets such as Belgium, France, Germany and, soon, the Netherlands.

Banking executives celebrated the move as a pivotal step in delivering a truly European, sovereign payment solution. “By joining EPI and supporting Wero’s launch, we reaffirm our dedication to secure, innovative and user-centric payment services,” said Laurent Zahles, CEO of Banque Raiffeisen. Béatrice Belorgey, Chair of BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg, added, “Following Wero’s successful debuts in Germany, France and Belgium, we’re excited to bring this platform to Luxembourg—offering customers simplicity, value and seamless cross-border capabilities.”

EPI has partnered with Payconiq International to ensure merchants transition smoothly from the existing Payconiq solution. Beginning in early 2026, Wero will be progressively introduced to retailers, with full migration completed by September 2026. Françoise Thoma, CEO of Spuerkeess, noted, “This collaboration lays the foundation for a unified digital wallet that empowers both consumers and businesses and cements Luxembourg’s role as a financial-innovation hub.”

Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI, emphasized Luxembourg’s strategic importance: “With its advanced infrastructure, high digital adoption and international workforce, Luxembourg is the ideal springboard for scaling our cross-border instant-payments solution.” Building on over 40 million Wero registrations across four markets, EPI will continue expanding its bank and partner network and roll out new features—e-commerce payments by late 2025, followed by subscriptions, loyalty programs and enhanced in-store functionality in 2026.

Historical Reminder: Since 1911, POST has been offering financial services in Luxembourg. At the time, in response to issues such as cash shortages and the exclusion of a segment of the population, the introduction of a national and international postal check and transfer service provided the entire population with facilities previously reserved for bank customers. Since then, financial inclusion for all, including the most vulnerable, has become the raison d’être of POST Finance.
