European TSOs Launch Alliance to Drive Innovative Weather-Resilient Grid Solutions

(IN BRIEF) Eight leading European transmission grid operators have established the TSO Innovation Alliance to jointly accelerate innovation in the electricity sector. The Alliance’s first initiative, “Weather and Grid Resilience,” will invite startups to develop data-pooling platforms and real-time probabilistic models to counteract the impacts of extreme weather and improve the integration of renewable, weather-dependent energy sources. Founding members—Terna, RTE, Swissgrid, the Elia Group, TenneT Holding, Red Eléctrica, and Amprion—signed an MoU to pool resources, align strategic technology needs, and launch annual innovation programs. Manon van Beek underscores the necessity of “leapfrogging” traditional development to meet Europe’s energy transition goals, enhance grid efficiency, and maintain the continent’s leadership in green technology.

(PRESS RELEASE) ARNHEM, 2-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Leading European Transmission System Operators (TSOs) have come together to form the TSO Innovation Alliance, a collaborative platform committed to fast-tracking breakthrough solutions that bolster the resilience and efficiency of Europe’s electricity grid.

The Alliance’s inaugural focus, “Weather and Grid Resilience,” will launch an open innovation challenge aimed at identifying startups with cutting-edge technologies to mitigate risks from increasingly extreme weather events and enhance integration of weather-dependent energy sources. Participants will develop data-sharing tools to pool continent-wide meteorological and climate-impact data, alongside probabilistic, real-time models for predictive maintenance and cross-border transmission reliability.

Europe’s economic competitiveness and strategic autonomy hinge on an electricity network that not only supports the energy transition but also ensures stable, affordable, decarbonized power. Recognizing that incremental improvements are insufficient, the founding TSOs—Terna (Italy), RTE (France), Swissgrid (Switzerland), the Elia Group (Belgium/Germany), TenneT Holding (Netherlands), Red Eléctrica (Spain), and Amprion (Germany)—have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to pool expertise, align strategic priorities, and co-develop proofs-of-concept.

Manon van Beek, CEO of TenneT, emphasizes, “The speed and scale demanded by the energy transition require us to leapfrog conventional approaches. By uniting our innovation efforts, TSOs can accelerate renewable integration, optimize grid utilization, and reinforce Europe’s position as a global leader in green technology. This Alliance sends a clear message: we’re ready to act now to secure a resilient, future-proof electricity system.”

Going forward, the Alliance will run annual programs to scout promising technologies, share metrics and best practices, and pilot collaborative projects across member TSOs. Its shared platform model ensures that innovations address challenges transcending national borders and deliver robust grid stability for all of Europe.
