Eneco Debuts Flexibility Rewards to Help 35,000 Homes Ease Grid Congestion

(IN BRIEF) Eneco, in partnership with Liander, Stedin, Enexis, Essent and Vattenfall, is launching a Flexibility Rewards program targeting 35,000 households in 21 congested areas. From July, participants can earn benefits—such as discounted EV charging or home-battery offers—by shifting electricity use to off-peak hours. Our pilot achieved a 68% reduction in evening-peak demand. Eneco will provide smart home batteries and EV chargers that charge on abundant green power and discharge during peaks, helping stabilize the grid. Additional partners like Zonneplan are invited to join.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 1-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Eneco is joining forces with grid operators Liander, Stedin and Enexis, alongside Essent and Vattenfall, to empower households in alleviating local grid congestion and securing a reliable electricity supply. Beginning in early July, we will invite roughly 35,000 homes across 21 high-demand regions to shift their power use to off-peak hours—benefiting both their wallets and the grid.

As part of our tailored Flexibility Rewards program, participating customers can choose from incentives such as reduced overnight EV-charging rates or exclusive discounts on home-battery systems. These smart batteries charge when renewable power is plentiful and discharge during peak times, helping to flatten demand spikes without compromising comfort. Our smart EV chargers similarly optimize charging windows to the cheapest, greenest hours of the day.

“Through our pilot with home charging stations, evening-peak consumption fell by an average of 68 percent,” says Selina Thurer, COO Customers at Eneco. “This shows how willing our customers are to embrace flexibility when given the right tools and rewards. By scaling these solutions in cooperation with Liander, Stedin, Enexis, Essent and Vattenfall, we can make a significant dent in congestion and support a cleaner, more resilient grid.”

Eneco will communicate directly with eligible households, providing guidance on installation, usage tips, and updates on earned rewards. We also welcome other energy partners—like Zonneplan, which has already joined—to expand this collective effort. Together, we aim to transform everyday consumption into a powerful lever for grid stability and sustainability.
