(IN BRIEF) The EBRD has committed a €90 million loan to ENGIE Romania to fund at least 250 MW of new solar and wind projects by 2028, marking the first joint renewable energy partnership between the two institutions; ENGIE Romania, part of the €2 billion‑invested ENGIE Group, will leverage this financing to advance its decarbonisation strategy, as highlighted by EBRD Director Grzegorz Zielinski and ENGIE Romania CEO Nicolas Richard.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 22-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has agreed to provide a €90 million loan to ENGIE Romania to accelerate the development of renewable power across the country. This financing will support the construction of new solar and wind assets amounting to at least 250 MW of clean energy capacity by 2028, reinforcing Romania’s shift towards decarbonisation.

As a major energy supplier and distributor in Romania, ENGIE Romania brings decades of local expertise as part of the global ENGIE Group, which has invested over €2 billion in the Romanian market since 2005—primarily in gas distribution and renewable energy ventures. The EBRD’s backing marks its first partnership with ENGIE Romania and underscores the Bank’s ongoing commitment to green transitions in Central and Eastern Europe.

“Partnering with ENGIE Romania to finance new renewable projects aligns perfectly with our mission to drive sustainable energy investments in the region,” said Grzegorz Zielinski, Director for Energy Europe at the EBRD. “This loan lays the groundwork for a lasting collaboration focused on achieving ambitious decarbonisation targets.”

Nicolas Richard, CEO of ENGIE Romania, added: “The EBRD’s support empowers us to expand our renewables portfolio, which is central to our strategy of offering customers affordable, green energy solutions. We look forward to working together to build a cleaner and more resilient energy system for Romania.”
