Dräger Launches Breathguard 2500 Ultra-Rugged Gas Detection System for Defence and Confined Space Operations

(IN BRIEF) Dräger’s Engineered Solutions division has launched the Breathguard 2500, a rugged, bespoke gas detection system developed in response to a requirement from Rheinmetall Landsysteme for use in confined spaces such as military vehicles including the Boxer the device continuously monitors carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide levels, providing audible and visual alarms and transmitting real-time data via CAN to vehicle control systems for rapid response it is built to perform reliably under extreme conditions, features patented pressure compensation and a silent mode, and can also be used in industrial, construction, and emergency rescue environments where ventilation is limited

(PRESS RELEASE) LÜBECK, 10-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Dräger’s Engineered Solutions division has introduced the Breathguard 2500, a newly developed, highly specialized gas detection system designed for use in defence, industrial, construction, and emergency rescue environments where confined spaces pose a risk of exposure to dangerous levels of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. The device has been engineered to provide continuous atmospheric monitoring in some of the most challenging operational conditions.

The development of the Breathguard 2500 was driven by a specific requirement from Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, a long-standing defence and security partner of Dräger. Rheinmetall requested an ultra-durable monitoring solution capable of operating reliably inside military vehicles, including its new Boxer flexible capability vehicle. Dräger responded by designing a ruggedized system tailored to meet the extreme demands of modern military operations.

The Breathguard 2500 enhances personnel safety by continuously measuring ambient gas concentrations inside enclosed environments. If carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide levels reach hazardous thresholds, the device triggers both audible and visual alarms to alert all occupants. In addition, the system is integrated with vehicle control systems through the Controller Area Network (CAN), enabling real-time transmission of data to the Human Machine Interface (HMI) so crews can react quickly and effectively to emerging threats.

At the core of the Breathguard 2500 is advanced electrochemical sensing technology that delivers high sensitivity, precision, and reliability even under extreme conditions such as shockwaves, vibrations, or very high temperatures. The device features a patented internal pressure compensation system designed to function across a wide atmospheric pressure range between 700 and 1300 millibars. It also includes a silent mode that suppresses audible alarms and dims visual indicators when required, ensuring compliance with defence sector testing standards while maintaining operational discretion.

While initially developed with military applications in mind, the Breathguard 2500 is suitable for a wide range of use cases. It can be deployed in land and naval military vehicles, as well as in industrial facilities, construction sites, and emergency rescue scenarios where ventilation may be limited or unpredictable.

Tom Pearson, Marketing Manager for Engineered Solutions at Dräger, highlighted that the Breathguard 2500 reflects the division’s broader capability to design safety solutions for the most demanding environments. He emphasized that Dräger’s engineering expertise enables the company to adapt and refine critical life-saving technologies across multiple sectors, ultimately protecting personnel working in high-risk conditions. Pearson also expressed satisfaction in meeting Rheinmetall’s technical requirements and contributing to the safety of military crews.
