DNV and Brinav Partner to Advance Autonomous Shipping Technology

(IN BRIEF) DNV and Brinav have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to accelerate the development and approval of autonomous and remote-controlled shipping technologies. This collaboration aims to improve maritime safety and efficiency by advancing Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS). Brinav is working to secure Type Approval for its situational awareness and navigation systems, with DNV providing verification and support. The partnership will utilize a 220 NM² test area in Qingdao to trial these technologies, contributing to the future of autonomous shipping.

(PRESS RELEASE) BÆRUM, 12-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Classification society DNV and maritime technology company Brinav have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to fast-track the development and approval of autonomous and remote-controlled shipping technologies. This collaboration aims to enhance maritime safety, efficiency, and sustainability through cutting-edge innovations in autonomous vessel navigation.

Brinav, a specialist in autonomous and green maritime technologies, is working towards obtaining Type Approval for its situational awareness system and other navigation assistance products. DNV will support Brinav in verifying and approving these systems, contributing to the safe integration of autonomous functions in newbuild projects.

Both companies will use Qingdao’s 220 NM² test area to trial these technologies and develop assurance for novel solutions. Brinav’s CEO Jiang HaiYing emphasized the importance of this partnership in advancing Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), while DNV’s Jarle Coll Blomhoff highlighted the critical role of situational awareness systems in realizing autonomous vessel operations.
