Buderus Edelstahl to sell hot rolling and mechanical processing divisions to GMH Gruppe securing 670 jobs in Wetzlar

(IN BRIEF) Buderus Edelstahl, owned by Mutares SE & Co. KGaA, has agreed to sell its hot rolling and mechanical processing including heat treatment divisions to GMH Gruppe, with the deal expected to close in late 2025. The move secures around 670 jobs at the Wetzlar site and strengthens GMH’s special steels portfolio. Buderus Edelstahl, acquired by Mutares in February 2025 from voestalpine AG, generates about EUR 360 million annually and is known for its tool and high-grade structural steels. Alongside this sale, the drop forging division will transfer to FerrAl United Group, another Mutares subsidiary, while the remaining division is planned for closure in the fourth quarter of 2025. CIO Johannes Laumann highlighted that the restructuring measures taken since the acquisition have set the stage for the partial sale and positioned the company for sustainable growth under its new owners.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 28-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Buderus Edelstahl, a subsidiary of Mutares SE & Co. KGaA, has taken a decisive step in its transformation journey with the planned sale of two key business units. The company has signed an agreement to divest its hot rolling and mechanical processing divisions, including heat treatment, to GMH Gruppe. The transaction, scheduled to close in the fourth quarter of 2025, marks a strategic realignment designed to secure jobs and strengthen long-term competitiveness in a challenging steel market.

Mutares had acquired Buderus Edelstahl in February 2025 from Austrian group voestalpine AG as part of a carve-out. Since then, a series of restructuring measures and optimizations have been initiated at the Wetzlar site, improving manufacturing processes and preparing the company for further strategic changes. Buderus Edelstahl is recognized internationally for its high-quality special steels, including tool and high-grade structural steel, serving a wide global customer base and generating around EUR 360 million in annual revenue.

The sale of the hot rolling and mechanical processing divisions to GMH Gruppe will significantly expand GMH’s position in the special steels sector, while at the same time securing approximately 670 jobs at Buderus Edelstahl’s Wetzlar operations. Despite continued pressure in the global steel market, this move provides stability for employees and paves the way for future growth within GMH Gruppe’s portfolio.

In addition to this transaction, Buderus Edelstahl’s drop forging division is set to be sold to FerrAl United Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mutares, later this year. Current plans also foresee the closure of the company’s remaining division by the end of the fourth quarter of 2025.

Commenting on the agreement, Johannes Laumann, CIO of Mutares, stated: “Since acquiring Buderus Edelstahl earlier this year, our team has quickly introduced initial restructuring measures that laid the foundation for this sale. We are confident that GMH Gruppe is the right partner to ensure sustainable development of these business areas.”
