(IN BRIEF) BASF has extended the applications of its mineral insulation material Cavipor®, now approved for use in floor slabs and roof insulation as filling between rafters. This advancement allows for complete building envelope insulation, reinforcing Cavipor’s role as a sustainable and efficient solution for energy renovation. Developed as a clay foam system, Cavipor combines non-flammability, water repellence, and vapor permeability with recyclability, achieving top environmental certification under EMICODE® EC1PLUS. With over 2,000 houses already insulated in Europe, BASF continues to expand Cavipor’s reach through strong distribution partnerships. The company will present Cavipor’s new capabilities at the ‘Klimafestival für die Bauwende’ in Berlin on November 19–20, 2025.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 4-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF has announced a major milestone for its innovative mineral insulation material Cavipor®, which is now officially approved for use in insulating floor slabs and roofs as a filling between rafters. Initially developed for the energy-efficient renovation of existing buildings with double-wall masonry, Cavipor’s new approvals now enable comprehensive thermal insulation across the entire building envelope.

Cavipor® represents a breakthrough in the insulation market as part of a new material class: clay foam. The mineral-based, water-blown insulation system combines sustainability, high performance, and ease of application, making it particularly suitable for retrofitting existing structures while maintaining architectural integrity.

“By introducing clay foam to the insulation market, we are setting new standards for energy-efficient building renovation,” said Dr. Ramkumar Dhruva, President of BASF’s Monomers division. “Cavipor delivers both substantial and sustainable advantages to the construction industry and underlines BASF’s commitment to advancing the green transformation of our customers’ industries.”

Cavipor® has already achieved notable success across Europe through a strong network of distributors and trained installation partners. Dr. Frank Reuter, Business Manager for Cavipor at BASF, highlighted the product’s growing adoption: “Through close collaboration with partners in Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, and the UK, approximately 2,000 houses have already been insulated using Cavipor®. The product offers a reliable way to improve energy efficiency, reduce CO₂ emissions, and enhance living comfort.”

The innovative clay foam technology features three water-based components that, when mixed with air at the construction site, expand up to ten times their original volume before being injected into hollow wall cavities through small drill holes. The foam spreads uniformly, ensuring full cavity coverage without gaps. Its unique composition makes it non-flammable, water-repellent, and vapor-permeable, allowing buildings to remain breathable and protected against environmental factors.

Cavipor® belongs to the thermal conductivity group 035, meeting stringent emission and environmental standards and carrying the EMICODE® EC1PLUS seal for low emissions. The product’s recyclability further supports sustainable construction practices, as it can be reused or safely disposed of as subgrade material without the need for complex separation from other waste during building demolition.

BASF will showcase Cavipor® and its pioneering clay foam material class at the upcoming ‘Klimafestival für die Bauwende’ in Berlin on November 19 and 20, 2025, presenting the product’s expanding role in the transition toward more sustainable building solutions.
