BAE Systems Opens Coventry Digital Engineering Hub to Power Next-Gen UK Submarines

(IN BRIEF) BAE Systems has opened a digital engineering centre in Coventry’s Ansty Park, recruiting 150 professionals from diverse sectors to support the design, operation, and maintenance of the UK’s submarine fleet. The hub will develop and monitor critical systems for in-service and next-generation vessels—Astute, Dreadnought, and SSN-AUKUS—by leveraging the Midlands’ engineering talent. Co-located with the Manufacturing Technology Centre, the facility enhances regional R&D collaboration. This initiative supports the UK Government’s Strategic Defence Review commitments to deliver four Dreadnought-class submarines and complete two remaining Astute-class boats.

(PRESS RELEASE) FARNBOROUGH, 25-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — BAE Systems has inaugurated a new digital engineering hub at Ansty Park in Coventry, set to cultivate local talent and support the UK’s submarine programmes while creating 150 regional jobs. The facility will recruit engineers from finance, automotive, sales sectors, and defence veterans, training them to deliver critical systems for active vessels and future classes, including Astute, Dreadnought, and SSN-AUKUS submarines.

Steve Timms, Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Submarines business, said that this Coventry office ushers in a “thrilling phase” of engineering innovation. By tapping into the Midlands’ rich pool of expertise, the hub will design and optimise the complex nuclear-grade systems built at Barrow-in-Furness, ensuring round-the-clock support for Royal Navy submariners.

Rear Admiral Paul Carroll of the Submarine Delivery Agency added that the Midlands’ status as a leading innovation region makes Coventry an ideal base. Co-locating with the Manufacturing Technology Centre strengthens both organisations’ R&D capabilities and solidifies regional defence investment.

The hub’s launch aligns with the UK Government’s Strategic Defence Review, which endorses constructing four Dreadnought-class vessels to maintain the nation’s nuclear deterrent into the 2030s, alongside completing two final Astute-class boats. Sir Rick Thompson, Managing Director of Defence at MTC, noted that the partnership will boost the region’s credentials as a centre for advanced manufacturing and industrial technology.
