Iberdrola and Amazon further expand their global renewable energy partnership and harness the AWS cloud to scale Iberdrola’s business

(IN BRIEF) Amazon and Iberdrola have expanded their renewable energy partnership with new power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Portugal and Spain, adding 476 MW of renewable capacity to their collaboration. The new agreements include Amazon’s first PPA in Portugal for 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex and additional solar and wind projects in Spain, producing a total of 1,093 GWh of clean energy annually. The partnership supports Amazon’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Iberdrola also utilizes Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance its digital capabilities, including migrating operations and launching a Virtual Desktop service. This collaboration continues to drive innovation and sustainability in the energy sector.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID/LISBON, 4-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Amazon and Iberdrola have expanded their global renewable energy partnership with the addition of 476 megawatts (MW) of new power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Portugal and Spain, bringing the total contracted capacity to date to over 66,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh). This new agreement expands the collaboration into five countries, marking a significant milestone in the companies’ shared commitment to the transition to sustainable energy.

The PPAs include Amazon’s first PPA in Portugal, where it has committed to purchasing 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, the largest wind farm in the country. This wind farm, which is scheduled to begin construction in early 2025, will generate enough carbon-free electricity to power 128,000 households annually. Additionally, two agreements were made in Spain, totaling 257 MW, which will generate clean energy from solar and wind resources. These three projects are expected to produce approximately 1,093 GWh of electricity each year, enough to power around 300,000 homes.

This expansion of the partnership aligns with Amazon’s goal to match the energy consumed by its operations with 100% renewable energy, helping the company meet its target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Amazon, recognized as the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, now has more than 600 renewable energy projects across the world.

Iberdrola and Amazon’s continued collaboration also involves advancing digital innovation. In 2024, Iberdrola migrated its extensive suite of applications to Amazon Web Services (AWS), including its DOMINA Renewables Operations & Maintenance ecosystem. The companies are also working together to leverage AWS’s agility and scalability, with plans to deploy a Virtual Desktop as a Service platform using Amazon WorkSpaces Core, enhancing operational efficiency across Iberdrola’s business lines.

Aitor Moso Raigoso, Executive Vice President of Customer Business at Iberdrola, stated, “Our partnership with Amazon reflects our shared commitment to advancing sustainable energy and driving the global energy transition. Together, we are accelerating decarbonization and enabling businesses to meet their climate objectives.”

Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, added, “We are excited to deepen our support for Iberdrola’s growth, using AWS’s advanced data and AI services to help accelerate innovation and achieve our sustainability goals more efficiently.”

The partnership continues to be a driving force in renewable energy, with Iberdrola recently being named the top seller of PPAs in Europe for the second year in a row, according to the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025 report.
