(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 24-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom has been named one of Fast Company’s World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2026, recognizing its role in transforming the U.S. rail industry through the development and production of Amtrak’s NextGen Acela high-speed trains. The distinction highlights the project’s broad national impact, from technological advancement to economic development and job creation across multiple states.

The NextGen Acela program represents a significant step forward for passenger rail in the United States, introducing modern high-speed trains based on proven European technology while being designed and manufactured domestically. Built on Alstom’s Avelia platform, the trains are capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 mph, making them the fastest in North America, while also meeting stringent U.S. Federal Railroad Administration Tier III safety standards.

The project has had a substantial economic footprint, particularly in upstate New York, where more than 1,200 jobs have been created, including approximately 800 manufacturing roles in the Hornell facility. Beyond this local impact, the initiative supports a nationwide supply chain involving 180 suppliers across 29 states and 137 communities. With 95% domestic content, the program has helped establish the first high-speed rail manufacturing ecosystem in the United States, supporting an estimated 15,000 jobs nationwide.

Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas, emphasized the significance of the project in demonstrating the country’s capacity for innovation and industrial growth. He highlighted how collaboration with Amtrak has enabled the development of advanced rail solutions that not only improve travel experiences but also contribute to economic development and job creation.

The trains themselves have been designed with a strong focus on passenger comfort and modern travel expectations. Features include larger windows for improved natural light, ergonomically designed seating with enhanced support, and a 27% increase in seating capacity compared to the previous generation. Additional amenities such as high-speed 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, individual power outlets, reading lights, and an updated onboard café concept further enhance the passenger experience.

Fast Company’s annual list recognizes organizations that are driving meaningful innovation across industries. The selection process evaluates companies based on their ability to translate forward-thinking ideas into tangible impact, placing Alstom among leading global innovators shaping the future of transportation.

The NextGen Acela initiative also demonstrates how investment in rail infrastructure can support long-term economic growth by strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities and creating skilled employment opportunities. By combining decades of high-speed rail expertise with local production, Alstom has contributed to building a foundation for future high-speed rail projects in the United States.

Through this recognition, Alstom reinforces its position as a key player in advancing sustainable mobility solutions and modernizing rail transport, while helping to redefine how communities across the country are connected.
