(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 24-Jul-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has been awarded a significant contract to supply 90 Adessia Stream commuter trains to Germany’s S-Bahn Cologne network. The contract, valued at over €4 billion, also includes a comprehensive 34-year maintenance agreement, marking Alstom’s largest order in Germany to date.

Innovative and Accessible Train Design

The Adessia Stream trains, to be operated by local rail passenger transport authorities go.Rheinland and Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), are designed with a strong emphasis on innovation, accessibility, maintainability, and lifecycle optimization. This new generation of trains is expected to transform public transport in the Cologne region for decades, offering enhanced passenger experiences and higher service quality.

Müslüm Yakisan, President of the DACH region at Alstom, stated, “The new generation of vehicles for S-Bahn Cologne will have a decisive impact on public transport in the region and the cityscape for decades to come. Alstom will deliver comfortable and innovative trains with a high level of passenger experience and a strong focus on accessibility.”

Comprehensive Features and Specifications

The trains will come in two versions: a 9-car version nearly 150 meters long and an 11-car version almost 170 meters long, with capacities of over 1,150 and 1,340 passengers respectively. Both versions will feature Wi-Fi, power sockets, powerful air conditioning, and specially treated windows for better mobile reception. Multi-purpose areas will provide space for prams and bicycles, while gap-bridging devices ensure level access. Each end-car will have a dedicated wheelchair area and an accessible toilet, marking the first time S-Bahn trains in Germany are equipped with toilets. Additionally, a digital hearing system via Bluetooth will cater to hearing-impaired passengers.

Michael Vogel, Managing Director of go.Rheinland, commented, “We have commissioned a completely newly developed vehicle that is tailored to the special needs and requirements in our region. We are thus raising the S-Bahn fleet to a new level and are already looking forward to using the trains.”

Maintenance and Lifecycle Optimization

The development and production of the trains will be handled by Alstom’s sites in Hennigsdorf and Bautzen, Germany. Maintenance will be carried out in modern depots in the Cologne area, employing preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance strategies to ensure high vehicle availability and reduced costs over the trains’ lifecycle.

Oliver Wittke, Spokesman of the Board at VRR, added, “Both the exterior and interior layout of the new S-Bahn trains will help us to offer passengers higher quality and stable services.”

Sustainable and Efficient Mobility Solutions

Alstom’s Adessia Stream trains are among the most sustainable urban mobility solutions, designed for all climatic conditions and suitable for both electrified and non-electrified networks. With over 60 years of experience and more than 40,000 rail cars in service across 60 commuter systems globally, Alstom is committed to advancing sustainable operations and enhancing passenger experience.

Harald Reissner, Senior Vice President of ANDRITZ Clean Air Technologies, added, “This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to support our customers with innovative technologies for the green transition.”
