Alstom Achieves Top CDP Climate Grade and Climbs to Global Top Ten in Sustainability Rankings

(IN BRIEF) Alstom has earned top marks for its climate and sustainability performance, receiving a CDP A grade for 2024 and ranking #7 globally and #4 in Europe on Corporate Knights’ 2025 sustainability lists. Its CSR strategy focuses on net-zero mobility, resource preservation, and a responsible supply chain, backed by ambitious targets: a 40% cut in operational CO₂ by 2030 and significant reductions in emissions intensity per passenger- and ton-kilometre by 2030/31. Key initiatives include installing solar panels at manufacturing sites, securing renewable energy via power-purchase agreements, comprehensive recycling programs, circular-economy measures like predictive maintenance and component reuse, and sustainable procurement involving recycled materials. Independent ESG assessments confirm Alstom’s progress, and the company continues to push the envelope through partnerships (e.g., with SSAB) and adoption of GS1 traceability standards. Alstom will highlight these efforts at the UITP 2025 Summit.

(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 11-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom proudly announces two major accolades that underscore its leadership in sustainable transport and corporate responsibility. The company secured the highest possible A grade from CDP for its 2024 climate risk management practices, and climbed to #7 on Corporate Knights’ 2025 Global 100 Most Sustainable Companies list, while also earning the #4 spot on the inaugural Europe 50 ranking. These honors reflect Alstom’s deeply embedded CSR priorities—anchored in its Green ambition to pioneer eco-friendly mobility solutions and model ethical corporate citizenship.

Alstom’s sustainability framework targets three core objectives: achieving net-zero mobility, preserving resources through circular economy principles, and fostering a responsible supply chain. The firm has pledged to slash operational CO₂ emissions by 40% (relative to 2021/22 levels) by 2030, and to cut greenhouse-gas intensity by 42% per passenger-kilometre and 35% per ton-kilometre by 2030/31.

To reach these milestones, Alstom is rolling out rooftop and ground-mounted photovoltaic installations across its production sites, entering renewable energy power-purchase agreements, and aiming for 100% renewable electricity. It has implemented comprehensive recycling programs for cardboard, wood, and aluminum waste, and driven circular-economy initiatives—like condition-based maintenance and component reuse via its StationOne marketplace. Notably, Alstom’s rolling stock is already 95% recyclable, with some train models containing over 25% recycled content, and ambitious targets of 40% recycled materials by 2030. Meanwhile, its sustainable procurement strategy seeks a 30% reduction in carbon footprint from purchased goods and services.

Alstom’s efforts are independently assessed by leading ESG organizations. In March 2025, the company not only maintained a CDP A score (up from A- in 2023) but also advanced from #19 to #7 in Corporate Knights’ Global 100, and achieved #4 in Europe’s top 50. “These recognitions validate our ongoing dedication,” remarked Claire Caillaud, Sustainability & CSR Reporting Director.

Looking ahead, Alstom is intensifying its circular-economy drive by increasing the use of bio-sourced, recycled, and renewable materials; co-developing new low-impact materials with suppliers; and adopting GS1 traceability standards to track parts throughout their lifecycle. This data-driven approach enhances predictive maintenance, modernization, and repair, optimizing resource use and extending equipment longevity.

Most recently, Alstom and steelmaker SSAB partnered to source over 95% recycled, near-zero-CO₂ steel for a new locomotive platform. Alstom will showcase its sustainability innovations at UITP 2025, featuring a Decarbonise Life Cycle exhibit and a talk by VP Sustainability Véronique Andriès on greener procurement practices.
