Advanced Manufacturing Visionary Lars Sommerhäuser Awarded SATW’s Outstanding Achievement for Bridging Science and Industry

(IN BRIEF) Lars Sommerhäuser received SATW’s Outstanding Achievement Award at the members’ meeting for his leadership in advanced manufacturing and his role in uniting research with industrial application. As head of Empa’s Surface Science Coating Technologies team, leader of advanced manufacturing strategy in the ETH Domain, and director of the AM‑TTC Initiative, he advances both scientific projects and technology dissemination. Since 2016, he has steered SATW’s Additive Manufacturing group, supported Industry 4.0 initiatives, and helped found the Sustainable Manufacturing group, while amplifying the academy’s visibility through numerous event engagements.

Renowned as a trailblazer in advanced manufacturing, he has consistently served as a vital link between academic research and its real‑world industrial implementation, significantly influencing SATW’s evolution and collaborative efforts.

In his capacity as a SATW member and leader of Empa’s Surface Science Coating Technologies group, Sommerhäuser applies his deep expertise and enthusiasm to drive pioneering manufacturing methods across Switzerland. Beyond his Empa role, he guides the ETH Domain’s Strategic Focus Area on Advanced Manufacturing and oversees the AM‑TTC Initiative, where he champions innovative research and facilitates the transfer of cutting‑edge technologies to industry.

Since 2016, Sommerhäuser has been instrumental in SATW’s Advanced Manufacturing network: initially heading the Additive Manufacturing expert group, later chairing its coordination committee, and contributing to the Industry 4.0 specialist team. He also played a foundational part in launching the Sustainable Manufacturing working group. Through keynote presentations and active representation at conferences, he has elevated SATW’s profile and strengthened its research community.
