Austrian Airlines training center celebrates its 20th anniversary

• International recognition for Schwechat-based apprenticeship as an aircraft technician
• CEO Kay Kratky: “License to tune aircraft. Valid throughout Europe, from Albania to the United Kingdom.”
• Minister of Social Affairs Alois Stöger: “Thanks to Austrian Airlines for its commitment to training young people.”

VIENNA, 09-Oct-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — The training center of Austrian Airlines is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Today the technical operations at Vienna Airport include 150 trained apprentices and about 1,000 technicians. Each year the airport adds 12-16 new trainees. Accordingly, Austrian Technik ranks among the largest training facilities for technicians in Lower Austria., Alois Stöger, Minister of Social Affairs who concluded technical training himself, visited the training facility today on the occasion of its anniversary and praised the high ratio of women which it reached, amongst other achievements. “Training is always an opportunity for a good future. Only someone who is well trained earns more, has more promising career perspectives and is less likely to be unemployed. I would like to thank Austrian Airlines for its commitment in training young people, especially when it involves promoting women in technical professions,” Minister Stöger stated.

During the speech he held at the anniversary ceremony, Austrian Airlines CEO Kay Kratky also pointed out that efforts were continually intensified to make technical professions more attractive for girls. “If anything, girls undergoing technical training with us were the exception ten years. The fact that one out of five apprentices is female shows that we have taken the right steps”, Kratky said.

Since 2016, the training to become an aircraft technician carried out in cooperation with the Lower Austrian Economic Chamber and Chamber of Labor has been the only apprenticeship program in Austria with international certification. This means that graduates of the training center are eligible to work as aircraft technicians throughout Europe. In other words, as Austrian Airlines CEO Kratky explains, “Following their training in Schwechat, our young women and men have a license to fine-tune aircraft weighing 300 tons across the continent, from Albania to the United Kingdom.” At present, 51 apprentices are undergoing training at Austrian Airlines. The application period to commence training in 2018 begins in December 2017. The application process is carried out in collaboration with the Lower Austrian Employment Service (AMS).

The “aircraft engineering” training program lasts for 3½ years and includes practice-oriented work in Austrian Airlines’ own workshops (e.g. paint shop, plastics and avionics workshops, body shop) and in aircraft maintenance as well as theoretical instruction in a vocational school. Moreover, apprentices can attend internal and external specialist seminars (e.g. IT courses or technical English).
