ZF Surpasses 1.5 Million TraXon Transmissions and Advances Platform Toward Hybrid Commercial Vehicle Applications

The 1.5 millionth TraXon transmission worldwide rolled off the production line at ZF’s Friedrichshafen site. Here we see the development and production team involved.

(IN BRIEF) ZF has reached a production milestone with more than 1.5 million TraXon automated manual transmissions manufactured since the system was introduced in 2014. The transmission platform has become a global standard for heavy-duty commercial vehicles and is produced in multiple regions to serve worldwide demand. The latest generation, TraXon 2, delivers faster shifting, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced digital integration, while the upcoming TraXon 2 Hybrid variant is designed to support electrified transport by enabling electric-only driving in urban environments and conventional operation on long routes. The milestone highlights ZF’s continued focus on efficient and future-ready drivetrain technologies.

(PRESS RELEASE) FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, 26-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — ZF Friedrichshafen AG has reached a major manufacturing milestone with its TraXon automated manual transmission system surpassing 1.5 million units produced since its introduction in 2014. Designed for heavy-duty commercial vehicles, the modular transmission platform has become a widely adopted drivetrain solution, supporting fleets worldwide with improved efficiency and performance. TraXon units are produced at ZF facilities in Germany, China, and Brazil, helping meet global demand for advanced commercial vehicle transmission technology.

The original TraXon transmission helped redefine performance standards in heavy-duty drivetrains and established itself as a benchmark for efficiency and reliability in trucks, coaches, and specialized vehicles. Christian Feldhaus, Vice President of the Transmissions & Hybrids product segment within ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions Division, highlighted the system’s role in advancing transmission technology and noted that the recently introduced TraXon 2 continues to build on this legacy with enhanced capabilities.

Already in production, TraXon 2 incorporates upgraded hardware and software designed to deliver faster gear changes, stronger digital connectivity, and improved fuel efficiency compared with the previous generation. The system features next-generation microprocessors, integrated security modules, and redesigned electronic control units and shift actuators developed in-house by ZF. These improvements make TraXon 2 suitable for a wide range of heavy-duty applications, including long-haul trucks, coaches, and specialized equipment such as mobile cranes.

ZF is also preparing the platform for future transport requirements through the development of TraXon 2 Hybrid. The hybrid variant is designed to support the transition toward lower-emission mobility by enabling electric-only operation in urban areas while maintaining conventional engine performance for long-distance routes. This approach offers significant potential for reducing CO₂ emissions while preserving operational flexibility for commercial fleets.

The continued evolution of the TraXon platform reflects ZF’s strategy to support both conventional and electrified commercial vehicle powertrains while improving operational efficiency and environmental performance.
