BASF’s advanced stabilizers integrated into Xfloat’s floating solar platforms to deliver certified long-term durability

(IN BRIEF) Xfloat and BASF have partnered to enhance the durability and sustainability of floating solar systems by integrating BASF’s Tinuvin® 2730 ED light stabilizer into Xfloat’s HDPE floating platforms, enabling them to withstand harsh environmental conditions for over 30 years while reducing maintenance and lifecycle costs. The solution complies with stringent drinking water regulations and holds NSF-61 certification, allowing deployment in sensitive reservoirs, while Xfloat’s sun-tracking FPV-T technology has already demonstrated significant yield improvements in projects such as Singapore. Together, the companies are strengthening the reliability, performance, and environmental resilience of floating solar as a key pillar of the global renewable energy transition.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 3-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF has partnered with Xfloat Ltd., a pioneer in floating photovoltaic (FPV) technology, to strengthen the durability, safety, and environmental resilience of floating solar systems. Through this collaboration, BASF is integrating its advanced light stabilization technology with Xfloat’s innovative sun-tracking floating platforms (FPV-T), creating a high-performance solution designed for long-term operation in demanding aquatic environments.

At the core of this partnership is BASF’s Tinuvin® 2730 ED, a high-performance stabilizer developed to protect High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) from ultraviolet degradation, thermal stress, and environmental exposure. By incorporating this additive directly into Xfloat’s HDPE float structures, the companies have developed a system capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions and prolonged exposure to sunlight and water for more than 30 years. This extended lifespan aligns with that of modern solar modules, helping operators reduce maintenance, minimize replacements, and lower overall lifecycle costs, including the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE).

Avi Alcalay, Chief Technology Officer at Xfloat, said that the collaboration reflects the company’s commitment to engineering excellence and environmental responsibility. He emphasized that working with BASF has strengthened the material integrity of Xfloat’s platforms while ensuring compliance with the highest performance and safety standards, particularly for installations in sensitive environments such as drinking water reservoirs.

The integrated stabilizer complies with strict regulatory requirements under the EU Drinking Water Directive (EU) 2020/2184, Article 11(2)(b). In addition, Xfloat’s systems have obtained NSF-61 Section 5 certification, confirming their suitability for use in protected water bodies, including potable water sources. These certifications position Xfloat as a reliable provider of floating solar solutions for environmentally regulated sites worldwide.

Xfloat’s floating technology is already being deployed across multiple regions, including the United States, the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia. A flagship installation in Singapore recently demonstrated a 28 percent increase in energy yield compared with conventional floating solar designs, showcasing the performance benefits of Xfloat’s sun-tracking FPV-T system. With a rapidly expanding project pipeline, the company is scaling production and engineering capacity to support growing global demand for resilient, high-efficiency renewable energy infrastructure.

Ricard Vandellos, Vice President of Business Management Plastic Additives for EMEA and Latin America at BASF, highlighted the strategic importance of material science in accelerating the adoption of floating solar. He said that the partnership illustrates how advanced polymer additives can significantly improve the durability and reliability of renewable energy systems, reinforcing floating solar as a critical component of the global energy transition.

By combining Xfloat’s intelligent platform design with BASF’s VALERAS® portfolio of high-performance additives, the collaboration delivers a certified, long-lasting, and environmentally responsible floating solar solution. The joint approach provides developers and utilities with a proven technology that can be deployed even in highly regulated and ecologically sensitive water environments, supporting the expansion of clean energy generation without compromising environmental protection.
