(IN BRIEF) TÜV Rheinland (InterCert) has been designated as a Notified Body under the new EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, replacing the previous Battery Directive, allowing it to support manufacturers worldwide with compliance, testing, and conformity assessments across the entire battery lifecycle. The regulation introduces stricter requirements on safety, performance, sustainability, recycling, and supply chain due diligence, including responsible sourcing of materials such as cobalt and nickel from August 2027. TÜV Rheinland will provide comprehensive services to help companies meet these obligations and bring their battery products to the EU market in compliance with the updated regulatory framework.

(PRESS RELEASE) COLOGNE, 3-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — TÜV Rheinland (InterCert) has received official designation as a Notified Body from the European Commission under the new EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, which replaces the former Battery Directive (2006/66/EC). This status enables the organization to play a key role in supporting manufacturers as they adapt to the evolving regulatory framework governing batteries and waste batteries in the European Union.

With this accreditation, TÜV Rheinland is positioned to assist companies worldwide in navigating the requirements of the updated regulation and ensuring their products can be placed on the EU market in full compliance. The company is offering a broad portfolio of services covering the entire battery lifecycle, including conformity assessments, safety and performance evaluations, as well as testing related to environmental impact and recyclability. These services are available across Europe and internationally, reflecting the global nature of battery supply chains.

The introduction of the EU Battery Regulation represents a substantial shift for manufacturers and their suppliers, introducing new obligations that extend beyond product performance to encompass responsible sourcing and sustainability. Beginning in August 2027, companies will be required to demonstrate that critical raw materials such as cobalt and nickel have been sourced in accordance with due diligence standards, adding a new layer of accountability to global supply chains.

Since February 2024, the regulation has already required that batteries placed on the EU market meet stringent criteria related to safety, performance, sustainability, and end-of-life management. To verify compliance with these standards, manufacturers must engage accredited notified bodies like TÜV Rheinland to conduct independent assessments and testing.

Through its expanded role, TÜV Rheinland aims to help businesses meet these regulatory challenges while supporting the development of safer, more sustainable, and more transparent battery production and use across industries.
